So not only did Apple discontinue the standard MacBook, but the Mac Mini also has no optical drive. This is what we call a trend.

They have a tendency to jump on bandwagons too soon/late. Look at Firewire. Adopted it before anyone else, dropped it years after everyone else.
The trend in the industry is away from physical media, just like the trend against the floppy disk. Apple was the first major computer manufacturer to stop putting floppy drives on their computers. As streaming/downloading becomes the norm for most people, optical drives will go towards irrelevance.
