Round 2 of my "river plots" on high school math. This chart illustrates the extent to which calculus course taking in high school is related to students' math class in 9th grade. That is, in the U.S., if you didn't take Algebra I BEFORE 9th grade, you're very unlikely to complete calculus in high school.

The chart supports the notion that high school math is typically "tracked" into something akin to "non-college" (2+ math classes), "college" (3+ math classes), and "STEM" (3+ math classes + calculus) groups.
