If you are like me, it is often difficult to do serious photography when traveling with your family. I wish I had a simple method to address this problem, but I don’t. If you do, please let me know! Or perhaps you don’t think this is a problem. If that is…

I haven’t posted in December, largely because I was off on vacation in Europe (more on that in a later post). But one post I do every December involves my day job at Robinson Noble. Every year Robinson Noble produces a calendar for clients and friends…

Sometimes I feel like I get in a photographic rut – stuck on the same subjects, the same compositions. I need to refresh my creative, photographic juices. One way to do this is to take on a series of topics you might not otherwise and to look for new…

Tanya and I spent three days in Oregon last week. We stayed in Silverton, and I made several trips to Silver Falls State Park as well as a couple drives up into the Cascades looking for autumn color. Due to the drought we’ve had in the Pacific Northwest,…

I recently was completing some long over due editing from shots I took in 2013 and came upon this image. I had not touched it since importing it into my Lightroom catalog nearly two years ago. I decided to see what I could do with it. Below is the…

My recent trip to Europe confirmed something I already knew, travel photographers need to embrace high ISOs. Sure I took my tripod along on the trip, and I used it frequently. But mostly when outside buildings. Most museums and other indoor attractions…

Granted, spending five days in Reykjavík over Christmas does not make me an expert on Iceland in winter. Further, my vacation was a true family affair (besides Tanya, our son, Brooks, and Tanya’s mother, Maxine, joined us on the trip), making time for…

Last Thursday was Thanksgiving in the United States. I’m thankful to live in such a place that can give sunrises like the one I found on Thanksgiving morning. Normally, you need clouds in the sky for good sunrise or sunset shots, but in this case, I…

On my trip several weeks ago, besides visiting Silver Falls State Park, I drove through some of the Oregon Cascades. It was, perhaps, not the height of autumn color in the Cascade Mountains, but it was close. Prime time may have been last week, or maybe…

The image above is another from my trip to the beach last month. It is my favorite of the whole trip, and I recently made a print of it. I thought I’d tell you how this particular image went from just an idea to a final print. However, if you want to skip…

As I previously mentioned, last weekend I headed up to Alaska on a fishing trip. And most of my time was spent fishing rather than on photography. Weather was a major factor in keeping the camera in the bag – it rained four out of the five days I was…

Introduction
I an a freelance photographer based in Tacoma, Washington. I discovered my passion for photography at an early age in the beautiful landscapes of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, where I was born and raised. My  photographic skills are largely self taught; my formal education is in geology. Though my portfolio contains images from around the world, I hold a special love for the American southwest; naming my company, Seldom Seen Photography, after a fictional character from southern Utah. My photography has won both local and international awards, and has been published by National Geographic, Northwest Travel Magazine, EOS Magazine, and Washington State Tourism, among others. I have also written several travel photography articles and teach photography in the classroom as well as to individuals. You can contact me through this profile, or by visiting my website.
