working on a slide on 'finding readers' for your blog. It's very much skimming the surface of a topic that you could spend hours unpacking but interested in your feedback. You'll need to view it large to see.

This is so true, and something I need to remind myself of daily! Whenever I find myself blocked, it's usually because I'm comparing myself to others. Sometimes, I'm not only comparing (and therefore competing with) the quality of writing, but also the success of others. But, in the end, if I'm saying what I feel I need to say, in the best way that I can say it, I've done all I can and should be happy with it.

Writing is not a competition.
reposted from reddit.com/r/writing

Too many people think of writing as a competition. They think that they're competing with not only their peers, but with the writing that has come before.

I want to remind you that writing is not a competition.

Writing is an expression. Nothing more. Nothing less.

You don't have to worry about your writing being good or bad or in between. You don't have to compare yourself to other writers. You don't have to be upset at yourself for not writing as much as you want. You don't even have to write. It is not a competition.

Sure, you can express something of value and sell it and make money. That does not make it a competition. The market is not saturated. There is room enough for everyone. The first Harry Potter book still sells. The Bible still sells. Chicken Soup for the Soul still sells. If these mega-blockbusters can still sell, there is room enough for you.

And at the end of the day, writing is about communicating something of value, be that an entertaining story or an enlightening story; a how-to guide or a how-not-to biography; a blog post or a status update. They're all valid forms of expression.

Stop competing. Start trying to give value to the lives of your readers.

I just did some mock interviews with writing and tech comm students from the school I went to, and would have loved to have seen this before to share the link with them. Even though it's directed at graphic designers, it's applicable for many!

Want New Photos for your Cover?  Here's 100+ Hi-Res Freebies!

I love the new G+ covers!  So big and bold...smart.  If you want to use any of my photos (they are all Creative Commons Noncommercial), go for it.  Here is an album with 143 photos in it.  Maybe you will find something you like! :)

BTW, I have a 2nd album with 1000 photos in it that I was unable to share because of a (Bug #500?)... maybe this will be fixed soon.  Anyway, you can see that album at https://plus.google.com/photos/105237212888595777019/albums/5623042490481885105

This is so cool!

Fascinating. This WordPress plugin will automatically publish your book to your blog in a nice format that's easy to download in PDF, major ebook formats, and "almost any XML-compliant format."

And it's open source.

Story
Introduction
I initially joined ExperienceLife as a social media and editorial intern in August 2010, and have since become a full-time team member, taking on the role of associate editor. In addition to writing the Planner and Not to Be Missed departments for the print magazine, I am responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of ExperienceLife.com, and the social media efforts for Experience Life, and our microsite, RevolutionaryAct.com.

I came to the field of journalism after a 15-year career as a hair colorist and trainer, earning my BA in professional writing from Metropolitan State University in December 2010. I live in Minneapolis with my beagle, Plato.
