A process for aid workers to develop resilience, while interacting with others: "GRACE: Tools for Building Capacity and Compassion"

G: Gather attention on the inbreath; on the outbreath, drop into the body
R: Recall your intention; let your intention be a resource
A: Attune to yourself: body, heart, mind; attune to others: body, heart, mind
C: Consider what will serve: use your capacity for insight and intuition
E: Engage: take action; then end your interaction, reflecting on what transpired.

They say to each of us, black and white alike, that we must substitute courage for caution. They say to us that we must be concerned not merely about who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderers. Their death says to us that we must work passionately and unrelentingly for the realization of the American dream.
—Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We know that only love can conquer hate, that only love can bring all together in our name… Irregardless of our faiths, our ethnicities, where we are from, together we come in love. Together we come to bury racism, to bury bigotry, and to resurrect and revive love, compassion, and tenderness. —Rev. Clementa Pinckney

From my new book: "It seems you cannot really boil a frog, no matter how slow or fast the frog is boiled. But the story is a metaphor for a kind of overwhelm that escapes our noticing, until it is too late. This overwhelm can be based on how we respond to suffering, or it can show up in terms of the effects that our institutions have on our well-being, a kind of creep of uncaring, bias, discrimination, or violence that seeps into society or the institution that we serve in. This kind of suffering is often not recognized or acknowledged; it is a kind of sneaking normalization of the intolerable, which causes immeasurable harm."
