I hereby nominate the name "Ultimate Gullibility Syndrome".
Consciousness is an incredibly fascinating subject, but I don't think we'll find answers through imagination alone, there has to be some neuroscience in there. I find metaphysics interesting, and often very poetic, but ultimately entirely irrelevant for our understanding of the universe until we're advanced enough to simply call it physics (if that day ever comes).
Science gets things wrong all the time, because there are bad scientists out there, just like there are bad teachers, engineers, doctors etc. out there. The great thing about great scientists though, is that they celebrate when they discover that they got something wrong; it means they've learned something new.
Most (not all of course) of the mystics, conservative religious people, and other groups that put such faith in so-called "ancient wisdom" are closed to new knowledge about the natural world; their knowledge was set in stone thousands of years ago. I mean, all this talk about the grand alignment on December 21st 2012 in this video is a good example: that alignment actually happened many years before. There was an alignment on that date, but it wasn't nearly as perfect as the one years before.
I have no idea what your level of science literacy is, so this is just in general: It's really frustrating to have discussions about science and philosophy with people when it quickly becomes apparent that they are completely scientifically illiterate. I've tried that a few times, with creationists and such, and boy did that put my normally relatively strong patience to the test :) I love discussing these things, but it gets old pretty quickly when you find you're actually battling significant ignorance.
In this day and age, ignorance is a choice. So I'm glad to see you're actively searching for truth about our existence - that's the most important thing; I've met far too many people who simply don't care, and that can lead to making very bad choices in life because of unnecessary ignorance.
Must. Stop. Rambling... ;)
Right now they have some of their best deals ever, including a killer deal on the Mercury bundle (which includes virtually everything they have).
So I thought I should let you know, just in case :)
Science is by far the best tool we have for understanding reality in the same way democracy is the best governmental system we have. Both are far from perfect, but we know of nothing better.
