Than and Now.

This is the Mary Leila Cotton Mill in Greensboro, GA. It opened in 1899 and produced cotton sheets until the late 90's when it closed and was abandoned. It was apparently an EPA disaster because of the lead paint and other hazardous chemicals, many of which were dumped on the abandoned site by local farmers. Now, after a major cleanup and millions of dollars of investment, the main building has been converted to low income loft apartments named Mary Leila Lofts and it is really nice. I was hired by the company who now owns the site to photograph the building and while there I met one of the residents who actually worked in the factory.
The first photo was is believed to have been taken in the 40's. It was hard to find the exact spot where the photo was taken from due overgrowth, but I got as close as possible to get a shot similar to the original. Slide to the right to see the current photos; one in B&W the other in color.

The project of the week for the week of March 6, 2017 is the Mary-Leila Loft apartments in Greensboro, GA. The building was a Cotton Mill that opened in 1899 and produced cotton sheets until the late 90's when it closed and was abandoned. Like many factories in those days, it had it's own paower plant (the smoke stack is still standing). It was apparently an EPA disaster because of the lead paint and other hazardous chemicals, many of which were dumped on the abandoned site by local farmers.

Now, after a major cleanup and millions of dollars of investment, the main building has been converted to low income loft apartments named Mary-Leila Lofts and it is really nice. I was hired by the company who now owns the site to photograph the building and while there I met one of the residents who actually worked in the factory. It was very interesting, and is why I chose it as the Project of The Week. Be sure to also check out the "Now and Then" post I previously uploaded.
