how often I see "new design" (and expensive) websites, which do not meet this very basic....

Text usage when dealing with images
This Google guideline states:

"Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained in images. If you must use images for textual content, consider using the ALT attribute to include a few words of descriptive text."

You may think you know this already, but think about this...
- If the only place the name of your business is found is in your logo you may not be even telling Google the name of your business.
- If the only place your business address is found is in an image. you may not be telling Goole where your business is.
- If your category pages are just image links, you could likely rank higher by adding text links and some descriptive text for each link.
- Images take longer to load than text and adversly affect your pagespeed
- Are you using css effectively to replace images with text?
- Mobile networks are slow, using text rather than images will help mobile users

I Cannot Get This Article/Research Out of My Head

Scary, but illuminating - The Science of Protecting People's Feelings: Why We Pretend All Opinions Are Equal http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/03/10/the-science-of-protecting-peoples-feelings-why-we-pretend-all-opinions-are-equal/

The research can be summed up somewhat by these two paragraphs:

"the two individuals got to know each other quite well — and to know one another’s accuracy and skill quite well. Thus, if one member of the group was better than the other, both would pretty clearly notice. And a rational decision, you might think, would be for the less accurate group member to begin to favor the views of the more accurate one — and for the accurate one to favor his or her own assessments.

But that’s not what happened. Instead, report the study authors, “the worse members of each dyad underweighted their partner’s opinion (i.e., assigned less weight to their partner’s opinion than recommended by the optimal model), whereas the better members of each dyad overweighted their partner’s opinion.” Or to put it more bluntly, individuals tended to act “as if they were as good or as bad as their partner” — even when they quite obviously weren’t."

It's a sad truth that even when everyone is presented with evidence about people's relative competence, they bias to listening to and weighting opinions equally.

I updated the Mobile seo tool again based on your comments
http://www.feedthebot.com/mobile/

- Summary now has actual score for both user experience and performance (these are the Google pagespeed insight scores from api)
- Summary visuals (checkmark / warnings) now tied to those scores so you get a more accurate picture.
Previously, if you failed any user experience rule or any pagespeed rule you would get a warning. Now it is tied to scores.
score of 90 to 100 = green checkmark
score of 75 to 89 = yellow warning
score of 0 to 74 = red "x"
