Joan Jett

Joan and her double-cut California style 1968 Gibson Melody Maker, acquired in 1977 while she was still in The Runaways.

This guitar was originally owned by Eric Carmen, who had replaced the factory pelham blue paint with white and changed the pickguard. (He also had humbuckers installed.)

Joan used this Melody Maker to record many of her hits in the 1980s. It can be seen on the cover of her first major-label solo album Bad Reputation (1981).

Affectionately referring to it as "my #1 Baby," she retired this guitar from the road years ago and counts it among her most prized possessions.

1977: All the World's a Stage  Tour

For #doubleneckfriday - Alex Lifeson and his ill-fated cherry Gibson EDS-1275, performing a pre-release version of "Xanadu" with Rush.

"We were doing a gig with Blue Öyster Cult at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York, a few years ago, and the double-neck cherry-finish Gibson I had bought in Nashville shortly before that got injured. The rigging wasn't done properly, and a long-throw horn speaker fell right on top of it, shearing the bridges off and taking huge chunks out of the body." - Guitar Player magazine, June 1980

Thankfully, Alex soon replaced it with his famous white Gibson EDS-1275 doubleneck, used during the recording of the A Farewell to Kings album.

I didn't know "double neck Friday" was a thing. I'll have to participate in that some time...

30 June 1977: KISS releases Love Gun

The band's sixth studio album, and last classic KISS studio album, shipped platinum with sales exceeding 1,000,000 copies. KISS had just begun their reign as "the hottest band in the land," a claim confirmed by a Gallup poll.

With cover art by Ken Kelly, the album marked Ace Frehley's first lead vocal turn (on his "Shock Me") as well as the final time drummer Peter Criss would play on every track of a KISS album.

In the studio, Paul Stanley's significant contributions to the title track included writing, producing, arranging, singing lead, and playing rhythm guitars and bass.

Producer Eddie Kramer provided the memorable piano part to Gene Simmons' lecherous "Christine Sixteen."

"These are originals?" "Yes, sir. He doesn't make copies."

Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) reviews a portfolio of Mozart's work while Constanze (Elizabeth Berridge) treats herself to another Capezzoli di Venere (Nipples of Venus) in one of my favorite films, Amadeus (1984).

1957 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer

Available with three different types of high-output V-8 engines, this grandiose offering from Dodge featured "dramatic Flight-Sweep styling" courtesy of bolt-on fins attached to the rear quarter panels.

Strikingly low, long, and wide, the wraparound windshields and rocket-exhaust taillights each did their part to present the illusion of flight.

Perfect for luxury-seeking auto enthusiasts at the dawn of the Space Age.
