Google Post Ads Now Available

I think Google+ post ads have huge potential. I think they key to success will be the ability to stimulate a great discussion which naturally leads to the desired conversion.

As mentioned in the comments of +Mike Allton's post below, the potential to place a G+ Hangout as an ad really takes it up a step. Looking forward to seeing how well this works in action.

How To Create Google +Post Ads

As you may have heard, Google opened up the +Post ad option to anyone with at least 1000 followers this week.

+Mark Traphagen explained that, “What’s different here is that Google is enabling social content ads that aren’t on the social platform. Instead of littering Google+ with ads (one of the unsung benefits of Google+ is that three years in its stream are still ad free), +Post ads are places where people expect to see ads: on websites that already have Google Display ads.”

So how do we get started? Many businesses are chomping at the bit to start experimenting with these new ads and working toward driving traffic and interest to their business and Google+ presence. So I've written up exactly how to do that. Using the guide below, you'll be able to create your first Campaign and +Post Ad.

We'll also go over the different ad sizes and types, and reveal a couple of new findings.

What questions do you have about +Post Ads? Will you consider using them for your own business? Does it help to know that you can use posts from a personal profile or a page?

+Al Remetch from what I can tell, the costs are exactly the same as normal AdWords campaigns and ads - so it will just depend on your target and the competition.

Bidding and Targeting work exactly the same as any other AdWords campaign.

Killing the Blog Comments

+Copyblogger's decision to remove comments from their blog is an interesting extension on the duscussions many of us have had here regarding G+ embedded comments. As +Sonia Simone points out, it may be that with the rise of platforms such as G+, Twitter and others, there are other places to have this discussion. She also writes that if you have something powerful to add to the discussion, you should be doing so on your own platform.

The one drawback I see is the the blog comments provide a direct link to the author and publisher of the piece. It also provides a central place for the discussion. This forces the discussion to spread beyond the blog which is good but at the same time, creates a number of skaller discussions as opposed to the larger centralized discussion.

For example, I came across this article on the Social Media Examiner FB page where they were starting their own discussion. Allthough I've made an attempt to notify the publishers and authors of this adiscussion in my post, there was no sign that SMEX did the same.

These conversations will happen with or without the ability to comment directly on a blog post but it is much harder for the author to track the conversations and therefore participate in it without the centralized location of the article itself.

In the early days if blogging, the instant access to the publisher was one of the attractions and the discussion would often grow both in the comments and as others added their own related articles on their own blogs. Have we reached a point where the direct interaction of the blog comments is obselete?

We're moving the conversation around our content elsewhere (most importantly, to your own blog), and see how that works ...

I'm still a little thrown back by the fact they have decided to close down their discussion platform. Maybe they know something we don't? But G+ is growing by the day and isn't the "Ghost Town" it used to be. A new funnel appearing, maybe?

No I can't see this either.

Really?!

Just received this email. I thought this sort of SEO was dead. Besides, I never sold these for less than $250 a post.

"Hello!

I reached out quite a while ago about buying advertising on your site, and I wanted to follow up to see if we can work something out.

I am doing PR for a well-known ___  site. They are looking for a few high quality, ______related blogs and I think you could be a good fit.

Here’s all that needs to be done. You can choose between the following two options:

We write an original guest blog post (you can choose the topic to ensure that it’s a natural fit) and you post it on your site. The article will contain a simple link back to the __ website.

You take an existing article on your site and insert a quick 1-2 sentence plug (written by us) that includes a link back to their site within the body of the article.

I am more than happy to provide examples of past works we've done if you wish.

They pay a one-time fee of $40 through paypal as soon as the article (or excerpt) is posted. If you’re interested in doing this, let me know ASAP!"

Unless the sender has a false profile, this one isn't spam. She has reached out to me in the past trying to get a free article posted to my site. I think she was attracted by the PR of my site (which is dormant at the moment).

Fantastic advice. Coming up with something unique, researching it, plus allowing for in-depth problem solving within "the" article are 3 really important factors. Thanks for sharing +Jim Lodico.

"Over time Zite will be shut down" Aaargh

Flipboard is pretty but Zite is my go to reader. Hopefully Flipboard will be able recognize what I want to read as well as Zite does.

New Google Search Results Design

The new Google design makes it much easier to click on an ad without realizing it. Any other thoughts?

A day after saying its new search design was still just an experiment, Google has made it formal -- the new look is here to stay.
A day after Google said the new look was still an experiment, it has decided that the experiment was good enough to make for an official change. Now everyone should be getting the new design. Jon Wiley, Google’s lead design for Google Search, said on Google+, “you may have noticed that Google Search on desktop […]
