Bias can creep into data sets.
AI feeds on data. Bias in, bias out. The section headings are a bit misleading, but the concerns are valid. Technically, conflicting goals would be unintended consequences rather than bias; sometimes the AI resolves the contradiction between conflicting goals, and the result traps us in Bayesian pigeonholes rather than enabling choice and therefore freedom.

GOES-R to monitor sun and earth.
Space is an integral part of terrestrial weather.

Quote: The satellite’s primary instrument, the Advanced Baseline Imager, will provide images of Earth’s weather, oceans and environment with 16 different spectral bands, including two visible channels, four near-infrared channels, and 10 infrared channels. Improved space weather sensors on GOES-R will monitor the sun and relay crucial information to forecasters so they can issue space weather alerts and warnings.

Imagery of the apparent Schiaparelli crash landing site.
As disappointing as the result is, every mistake provides lessons to be learned for the next Mars mission.
NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has identified new markings on the surface of the Red Planet that are believed to be related to ESA’s ExoMars Schiaparelli entry, descent and landing technology demonstrator module.

Bye bye, ARA
The technology may be licensed, but there won't be an ARA phone manufactured by Google or branded similarly to the Google Nexus devices.
Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google has suspended Project Ara, its ambitious effort to build what is known as a modular smartphone with interchangeable components, as part of a broader push to streamline the company's hardware efforts, two people with knowledge of the matter said.

Germany may not go free of coal by 2050.
Part of the problem is size.

Quote: Even as the European Union’s biggest economy boasts the most installed green power on the continent, it also continues to emit the most greenhouse gas in the 28-nation bloc.
A policy document prepared for Chancellor Angela Merkel shows the German government is hesitating to set fixed coal-reduction targets ahead of national elections.

and meanwhile Canada may have turned off all our big coal plants by 2030

The silly German public are worse at risk assessment than the average I suspect. Petrified with fear of nuclear, but apparently willing to put up with far worse affects from coal.

Of course the real trick will be if they can wean themselves entirely from oil in any similar timeframe, especially for transportation, since that's still where they burn a vast amount of fossil fuels.

I think it will take us a little longer to stop using oil for transportation though....

Increased uptake of CO2 by plants apparently has slowed global warming.
Based on satellite imagery of vegetation, a new multi-modal climate model may be able to account for the slower rate of atmospheric CO2 increase this century so far. However, it's worth keeping the general adaptation syndrome in mind: the adaptive capacity of organisms is finite, and exhaustion sets in afterward. Until we can get a better quantitative handle on when that limit would be reached, the slowdown is merely a respite, assuming the inferences based on the model are right.
New findings suggest the rate at which CO2 is accumulating in the atmosphere has plateaued in recent years because Earth's vegetation is grabbing more carbon from the air than in previous decades.

C3 plants like very much higher CO2 levels. They evolved in high CO2 conditions.

C4 plants evolved in low CO2 conditions (glacial maximum) and do not have such a growth response to higher CO2.

However, C3 plants also do less well in higher temperatures. If temperature rises past some level then the extra CO2 will be less effective.

Falcon 9 explosion mystery probably solved.
The leading theory regarding the cause has an engineering fix. Space-X is expected to return to flight in December.

Quote: Musk didn't elaborate on how the solid oxygen formed or what happened after that, but the leading theory is that the solid oxygen may have ignited one of three carbon composite helium containers inside the oxygen tank, triggering the explosion that annihilated SpaceX's launch pad.
Elon Musk says the problem has "never been encountered before in the history of rocketry.”

Ethical artificial intelligence.
Fears of conscious AI may be misplaced, as "unconscious" but capable AI may be sufficient to pose an existential threat.

Quote: Rather than obsess about consciousness in AI, we should put more effort into programming goals, values and ethical codes.

Augmented Reality Gaming to get the vote out
It's time to vote! +John Hanke +Niantic

Quote: The Pirate Party has also tried to secure the youth vote by asking the developers of Pokemon Go to turn polling stations into Pokestops – locations where players can collect the items needed to catch Pokemon.
A protest party that campaigns against copyright laws and hangs a skull-and-crossbones flag at its headquarters is on course to form Iceland’s next government. The Pirate Party, which was formed four years ago by activists, poets and hackers, is currently ahead in the polls in advance of the general election on 29 October. It has the support of 21.6 per cent of voters, slightly ahead of the Independence Party, which is part of the current coaliti...
