I'm partying (so to speak) like it's 1999.

Sometimes I think about what my life is like in an alternate universe and whether or not I have a goatee in that other world. Anyone who grew up in the 1960s should immediately recognize why having a goatee is a requirement for my parallel universe self. But for those who don’t get it, let me explain.
One of my favorite episodes of the original series of “Star Trek” was about an alternate universe in which the crew was basically evil. To emphasize that trait in the character of Spock, they put a goatee on him. They did other things with other characters, but Spock’s goatee is what I remember best – perhaps because Spock was easily my favorite character on the show.
Sadly, I learn today that Leonard Nimoy, the actor who breathed life into that character over many years through many incarnations, has died. I only hope his Katra lives on somehow, and take solace in the fact that he had a long life and prospered.

A birthday blog for +Jane Ellen in which I ruminate on the source material for Joe Jackson's tune, "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"

Because he asked nicely. And for science.
A G+ Numbers Game (And a Thank-you, and a Call for Some Help)

So, I had a G+ milestone some time here in the last couple weeks.  I pushed past two-million page views, for whatever little that is worth.  That's kind of amazing, but I'm also aware that much of that is bot activity, so I'm not preparing my speech for my "Hollywood Walk of Fame" star just yet.

But thank-you to those many real flesh-and-blood folks (and a small group of especially loyal followers and friends) that contributed to that number.

And of course, I knew it was coming.  I've been watching the number climb constantly for months.  But while I'm was there, I've also been watching my follower count, which has remained curiously just short of 4000 for that entire time, to the point it's obvious that there's some sort of G+ algorithm throttling me to that point.  I don't know WHY it's throttled.  Maybe I don't circle enough people (currently about 770 really interesting folks, and I keep slowly adding, even though that is honestly more people than any one person can keep track of).

As of this posting, it's at 3,998. It will doubtless drop a bit as bots and spammers are nuked by Google (I block as many of them as I can identify personally), and then it will climb back up to 3,9980-something or maybe a little more, and then go back down a bit.  But it won't (of its own accord, anyway) go over 4000.

This has me curious, more than annoyed.  Why is it happening, and is there a way around this invisible ceiling? So this is where the favor comes in, ye loyal flesh-and-blood followers.  I need some people to circle me in short-order and hopefully push me over 4000, so we can see what happens.  Will it just throttle me back down (probably)?  Or is there some threshold of numbers or velocity that will click me into the "more than 4,000 is okay" category?

So, find me some followers, friends.  Share this post, +1 it, and twist your friends arms a little if necessary.  10 followers would probably do the trick to get past the line, but the more, the more likely we are to get some positive result.  If people want to do this just for the experiment and uncircle me after a few weeks, fine. The experiment should still work.

DO IT FOR SCIENCE!

Thanks.  I'll report on results, if any are apparent.

If EA would give me something new to build, I wouldn't be as likely to point out their "error."
