It's not clear to me that government surveillance is more of a problem.

Seem to me a lot of this is Madison Avenue technology and has been around for a while.

Why do AMBER Alerts take so long?

When a child is abducted, triggering an AMBER Alert, time is of the essence in getting the word out, which is why we have the alert system. But there was a carjacking today in Oakland that resulted in an AMBER Alert, and the word didn't get out at all quickly:

(local time)
12:40 - Carjacking occurred, according to the California Highway Patrol
13:29 - First mention of license plate number on Twitter (from @oaklandpoliceca)
14:03 - First tweet I can find mentioning an AMBER alert
14:28 - First tweet in my tweet stream (from @LosAltosPD)
16:09 - Timestamp in text of AMBER Alert email (CHP via Nixle)
16:16 - Text message received from Nixle
16:34 - Date header in AMBER Alert email
16:35 - Email received from CHP via Nixle

That's almost 4 hours from the time of the incident. The abductor could be long gone by then. Was the delay caused by humans or by network overhead getting the message out?

Last week's Renaissance app developer conference featured a prominent session on ethics. I'm hoping we see more of that at tech conferences.

We think that app developers should spend more time talking about ethics. Here's a start: a lunchtime forum at Renaissance 2014.

My friend +tim burks is organizing this conference, by developers for developers, in San Francisco January 29-31. Of particular interest to me are the sessions on Thursday "Get Security and Privacy Right" (featuring FTC attorney and privacy expert Laura Berger) and the lunchtime forum "Ethics for App Makers" with Prof. Shannon Vallor of Santa Clara University. Looking forward to it!

Very well aware of that site, and believe me, we're working hard to bring that & more.

I have been collecting my thoughts about the Snowden affair for some time, and it's a complex subject so I wrote some of them down. Appropriate material for #TheDayWeFightBack.

According to this article, you shouldn't use your own domain name for your login email address on sites because the domain MX record could be hijacked by an attack on your registrar. Are there registrars that provide enhanced security in recognition of this problem?

I couldn't agree more!  Account recovery is a really hard problem, and hasn't been the subject of enough research.

I have been playing around with largeish databases to see how MySQL and a representative NoSQL database, MongoDB, compare. I was surprised by the results - their strengths and weaknesses weren't what I expected.

I think so too. I was happy that I had pushed my hardware configuration to the limit, because otherwise I'd be wondering where that limit is.  I also took a subset of 1 million records and played with that, and it performed quite well.
