Still, my research revealed that computers from around 2000 to 2006 were literally plagued by this, PC and Mac. Cost Dell around USD $400 million to fix motherboards with these bad capacitors, and HP and others probably millions as well.
Computer tech warned me that many computer problems on older desktops often had failures of RAM, drives, cards, etc., costing owners money replacing all the parts when it was the swollen capacitor failure on the motherboard.
Replace the motherboard during that time when these capacitors were around and you might buy a motherboard with the same problems.
HP reports they "purged" their manufacturing facilities of all these problem capacitors in 2005. My monster desktop is 2009-2010, hopefully beyond the plague's grasp.
The stories of the "swollen capacitor plague" are fascinating, tech espionage, international politics, corporate theft, science...and consumers the victims, most not knowing they were victims, spending tons of money to fix things that they shouldn't have had to deal with.
