It took only 66 years from the day we finally created powered flight to being able to land a man on the moon.
Also, Virtual Reality is not recent at all. I remember when I was in elementary back in the 90's when VR was still a popular topic. It died off back then because we didn't have the processing capabilities back then to support a good VR experience and the equipment was too bulky and expensive to be of a any profit to the arcade stores of the time. The lack of good games didn't help either.
But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt as we are still having to deal with our limited understanding of the human brain and how it really works. That alone might become the reason why it probably might take even as long as 20 or maybe 30 years from now to see a true Amusphere come around.
