Earlier this week, after several rounds of testy, theatrical votes aimed at embarrassing Gov. Bruce Rauner , the Illinois House actually debated a bill on circuses. Oh, the irony.

Leaders of Illinois' largest philanthropies ask Gov. Bruce Rauner, House Speaker Mike Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton to put partisan politics aside and do what it takes to rescue Illinois. 
As the budget season grinds on in Springfield, every Illinois citizen now sees up close the ugly reality: Our state government is in a financial crisis, and our elected leaders have so far responded with paralysis.

Want to make your ballot meaningful again? Get behind the Independent Map Amendment. A statewide coalition is circulating petitions in support of the measure, which would assign the redistricting process to an 11-member commission. By +Chicago Tribune Editorial Board:

Mandating a higher minimum wage is at odds with the prevailing supply of and demand for labor. It will cost jobs, writes +Steve Chapman.
In the 1970s, when oil prices jumped, most liberals embraced a simple solution: price controls. It should be illegal, they thought, to sell oil or gasoline for more than a certain amount. Americans should be able to drive without being fleeced by oil companies and foreign governments.

An appeals court in New Orleans retained a lower court's hold on President Barack Obama 's executive actions on immigration Tuesday, a victory for the cause of opposing Obama's policies even when you don't have a better idea ;— ;or, in this case, any ideas at all.
