A waterfront, swimsuit-soaked weekend getaway without the long drive or the crowds is what the A Parent in Silver Spring crew found at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina last weekend. The resort is less than two hours from DC (only 1.5 hours for us Marylanders), ...

Jessica with WeAreTeachers again. Still looking for a featured classroom for the amazing Nature Conservancy virtual field trip! Your class will virtually journey to both the Mojave Desert and Palmyra Atoll, a wildly remote cluster of islands atop coral reefs and teeming with animal life.

Who wants to be the lucky class? We need to book a class ASAP! It's such an amazing opportunity.

Topic: Sun, Wind, Water, Heat - The Power of Renewable Energy. Take a Trip to Remote Islands in the Pacific and to the Scorching Mojave Desert

Best for: 5th or 6th Grade

Hard date & time: May 20, 2016 at 1 pm (ET). 40 minutes.

Expanded info: Join The Nature Conservancy scientist Alex Wegmann as we embark on a Virtual Field Trip to explore a compelling question: How can we get the energy we need without harming nature? By harnessing renewable sources of energy, such as sunlight and wind, scientists are finding ways to do just that.

On this journey, we’ll visit the Palmyra Atoll, a wildly remote cluster of islands atop coral reefs and teeming with animal life. Scientists there have developed ways to power the entire island almost exclusively through renewable energy sources.

We’ll also journey to the scorching Mojave Desert, home to rattlesnakes, tortoises, bats, and coyotes, to check out massive solar panel installations that are working to power large cities. We’ll learn about innovative methods for capturing energy that are safe, sustainable, and can change the destiny of life on our planet.

Although this free Google Hangout field trip is available to all, we would love to have a featured class on the air via your classroom or library webcam!

Interested in being the featured class? E-mail me, jmcfadden@weareteachers.com

Thank you!

My kids were some of the first kids to try out the new Terrapin Explorers course for kids age 5-9. They were dazzled by the experience. Both of my kids are a little tentative when it comes to heights and risks, but the gentle, confident, plentiful staff members are with the children every step of the way. Knowing they had constant support made all the difference to Charlie and Eve, and gave them the confidence to walk tightropes, cross swinging bridges, crawl through suspended tunnels and even zip line. The course has two levels, accessed by the decks of a wooden tree house home base. There are 22 elements for the kids to conquer. There is a great viewing area for parents. My kids also had a great time on the outdoor climbing wall. Children are completely and safely supported through harnesses, helmets and many safety procedures. I think it would be a fun kids' birthday party.
