Cranberry season is almost here, and it's time for me to break out my most favorite bread recipe for Thanksgiving. It's well worth the effort, believe me!

The Best Cranberry Nut Bread (from Cook's Illustrated)

⅓ cup orange juice
1 T. grated orange zest form 1 large orange
⅔ cup buttermilk
6 T. unsalted butter, melted, plus extra for greasing pans
1 large egg, beaten lightly
2 cups unbleached flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon baking soda
1½ cups cranberries, chopped coarse
½ cup toasted pecans or walnuts

Preheat oven to 375ºF. Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

Stir the orange juice, orange zest, buttermilk, melted butter, and egg in a small bowl.

Whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a large bowl. Stir the orange liquid mixture into the dry mixture. Stir in the cranberries and nuts.

Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350ºF and bake for another 30-35 minutes.

Stop your frustration, she tells me.
This is how it must be. We empty
and fill again and again.
To remain full – physically or intellectually,
spiritually or emotionally –
would simply leave each of us bloated,
moaning of the fullness we carry.

"Since there is no place large enough
to contain so much happiness,
you shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you
into everything you touch. You are not responsible.
You take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit
for the moon, but continues to hold it, and share it,
and in that way, be known."

Since I'm missing the great show, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, I've decided to post the powerful words of the great Carl Sagan.

"...The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."
