Keep these foods on hand if you plan on traveling this summer
A well stocked Kitchen for the summer traveller via The Entertaining House. Image via House Beautiful When I was young and we went away for any extended amount of time, my mother would empty the contents of the fridge so we didn't come home to any surprise science experiments. This also meant coming home to no food whatsoever and having to suffer until someone went to get the groceries. My mother tossed items like bread and butter in...

The anatomy of a perfect salad.

There are a few musts... Dressing is important. Make it from scratch. It's easy and use the freshest ingredients... layer textures, flavors and colors and there you have it.
There are salads and there are salads. Some you eat out of necessity, others you eat because you crave them. There's nothing more refreshing or satisfying than a great salad. What makes a salad great? It's a combination of colors, flavors and textures. I eat a salad daily, sometimes more often, especially when the weather is warm. As long as I keep my ingredients varied and fresh I never bore of them. Perhaps I will create a summer sala...

The Designhounds will "sniff out" those elements and areas of design to share with other desig...

Through the looking glass...
Those of you who've been reading and following me over the years know that I am greatly influenced by my grandmother's taste, style and sensibilities. Her lifestyle and joie de vivre have had an enormous influence on my life, and no less in my home. From my grandmother I have become a huge fan of color in my home. She was a master at finding everything at a bargain - she knew where to skip and where to splurge. Her style was classic...

Why do we get so sad when a musical icon dies? Because our lives and their music are so greatly intertwined.
2016 has been a tough year for the music industry. We've lost some truly great artists - artists that have moved, influenced and defined music and musical eras. This year, which isn't even half over yet, we've said goodbye to top talents which have included Glenn Frey, Maurice White, David Bowie and now Prince. Most of us have never met these musical icons in person. We may have seen them perform in concert, or on MTV (back when it trul...

Dining out with young children... to allow the screen or not to allow the screen? This is the question.
I have learned in my 18 years as a parent never to say never. Long before I had my own children I had all the answers. I knew exactly what I would do and what I wouldn't. Then one by one my children arrived and I tossed all that nonsense out the door. Should "screens" be allowed at the table? In short, no. But I've learned that there's an exception to this rule too. In my own home I do not allow iPhones, Pods or Pads at the table. Nor...

Every year Wilsonart sponsors a chair design challenge at a different art college. Every year the winner and 5 runner's up head to ‪#‎icff‬ to display their creative endeavors. This year's chosen school was in Detroit. I invite you to come meet these young talented artists and see what inspired their creations.
My day of design with my #designhound peers was sponsored in part by WilsonArt. That empty bottle of rosé... I have a pretty good use for it... and a kick@$$ vinaigrette recipe!
Uncorked & Repurposed. An empty bottle of rose becomes a perfect way to store and serve home made salad dressings. Image via The Entertaining House. There was a time when I would turn my nose up at a screw top wine bottle. After one too many evenings on the beach with forgotten, misplaced or lost corkscrews I changed my stance on the matter and started to appreciate the ease of the good ol' twist off top. In fact, the other evening ...

A must for those who love barns, architecture, interiors and history.
As we make great strides to slow down and return to basics, to bygone days and simpler times, many are embracing the American Barn as more than just a symbolic, but embracing it as the modern home. At Home in the American Barn is a beautiful tribute to the wonderful architecture of our past reconditioned to become the sought after residential spaces of today. Those of you who know me and or follow me on social media know that I am co...

Yale University Art Gallery... a small museum packs a powerful collection
A small museum with a behemoth art collection, the Yale University Art Gallery is truly the perfectly sized museum, offering something for everyone from Ancient Greece to modern day America. Founded in 1832, the gallery is steeped in history when patriot-artist John Trumbull gave more than one hundred of his paintings to Yale College.
