Although I've lived in Connecticut for over 20 years, I only recently learned about the Thimble Islands. The islands which are comprised of granite rocks and ledges are a result of glaciation centuries ago. Depending on the tides, and what many might consider an island (is a rock an island?) there are between 100 and 365 which serve as a rest stop for migrating seals. The islands are not only beautiful but are fascinating. I had the g...

Being a gracious houseguest... am I stating the obvious? Should house rules apply to guests? Should guests follow certain protocol or should they just come and go and exist as they please? Some say they'll do anything to be a gracious host and some say that certain guests simply take advantage. Clearly there's a fine line here... Would love to hear your thoughts.
During the summer many of us take off, sometimes for a couple of days, long weekends, for a week, even a month or longer. When we're not staying in hotels we're often staying with friends and family who've opened their homes to us. Oftentimes our hosts are there, yet every so often they're not and still kindly open up their homes. I've read dozens, if not more, I've read many posts, many of them often sharing similar bits of information...

It started off innocently enough. It was nearing dinner time as we were leaving Newport and wanted some sandwiches for the ride home. Our original plan was to stop off at a local deli, but the deli was closed and we needed a back-up plan. My youngest begged for McDonald's. While we are not McDonald's regulars, my youngest does love a good Happy Meal and so once or twice a year, when we are on the road, this iconic fast food company be...

Despite our greatest intentions we're often looking to fill our long summer days... Some ideas for families and for adults
Summer is here, finally! And despite the long and lazy days they're supposed to be, our lives are still full. We're still rushing to get to work and camp and wherever else life takes us. Sometimes when we do slow down, despite all that surrounds us, we're often looking for something to do. Sometimes we need to shake it up a little and break out of our ruts. I find that summer gets harder as the children get older. Not only do they ne...

The Japanese art of Kintsukuroi repairs broken pottery with seams of gold. it is in these repairs that the brokenness makes the object even more beautiful than it was before. The art of  Kintsukuroi is a long and difficult process, but the results are treasured by those around it. Uplifting and hopeful, this artform is an inspiring metaphor for dealing with the times we feel broken in life. It is a reminder that we become more beautif...

The sleeveless jacket took the streets and runways by storm in 2014. A year later they're here to stay and perhaps hotter than ever. I'm quite certain this fashion "trend" will have enough staying power to become a classic wardrobe staple. We'll be seeing a lot of this look this fall, a time of year that can be a maddening time to try to figure out how to dress as early in the season the calendar may say Fall while the temperatures cl...

There's something about a sandwich. It's satisfying, nourishing, and relatively easy to put together. These portable meals can be eaten just about anywhere and during the summertime, when the weather is warm and we want to spend our days outdoors, this perfect meal allows us to do so. Make it in advance, wrap it up well, and voila! My family happens to take sandwich making very seriously. We're not talking about a slice of meat, a pie...

A great book not to be missed. Lisa Genova does it again. Her latest about Huntington's is not light but is certainly thought-provoking... a perfect book for the beach, pool or on the plane headed to your next destination.
Book Review :: Inside the O'Briens - Image via Jessica Moseley Gordon I was first introduced to Lisa Genova a few years ago when I read Still Alice. I was riveted from the first page.  We are immediately introduced to Alice, the protagonist who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. Here we are given a very personal glimpse into the Alice's world and that of her loved ones. It's a frightening disease and as I read I questioned my o...

There's nothing like a good pb+j when the mood strikes. Whether you're partial to grape jelly or strawberry preserves, the combination of the sweet and the salty perfectly satisfies your cravings. This childhood favorite is comforting and nurturing. Whether you're a Welch's jelly purist or Smucker's strawberry fan, there's no right or wrong way to make or eat this classic sandwich. Best of all, it's simple and easy to make. There's no...

Eat chocolate, take naps, drink champagne, be gracious....
Today is my Birthday. I was born on June 1st, many many many years ago. As I rapidly approach the Big Five Oh, I like to celebrate and I like to take some time to be reflective of all the good things that have come my way, all the experiences I've had, as well as all that I've learned. Truth be told, I think the greatest lessons learned have happened within the past 10 years,  most of which took place within the past 5 years - some ev...
