Think outside the chocolate box this Valentine's Day - Gifts for the food and drinks enthusiast
It's a day that has become synonymous with chocolate, flowers and cards. Cupid aims his arrow... And hopefully it doesn't miss! It's a day of love and a day of romance. In the mid 1700's it was customary to give your love a small token and a handwritten letter. By the mid 1900's with the advancement of "modern" printing technology handwritten notes were to be replaced with pre-printed cards. We now refer to this day as a Hallmark hol...

Some worthwhile and humorous winter storm advice from the Bangor Maine PD to the Mid Atlantic states...
I saw the following on my Facebook stream this morning as shared by Yankee Magazine and it was just too good not to share with everyone! The following is some solid advice from the Bangor Maine Police Department. If anyone knows about snow survival tips, it's these guys! "Dear Mid-Atlantic of these United States of America, I think we all knew it could happen. Every year when you pack up your well tanned family and head back home f...

Need help sticking to those resolutions? Start in the kitchen!
We're more than halfway into the first month of the New Year. How are you doing with those goals and resolutions? Have you been undeterred? Focused? Strong-willed? Have you had a small set back or fallen off the wagon? When it comes to watching what we eat it can occupy much of our thought process and time. It can complicate food shopping and eating out. But it shouldn't have to. Moderation is key. If you slip don't punish yourself. The...

As we look forward to the hopes, promises and possibilities the new year brings, I don't think it's bad to look back and reflect... to learn, to remember... even if it wasn't the best of years.
Off years. We all have them. But are they really truly bad? Loss of life, love and jobs, ends of marriages are really all terrible and devastating things - but even when these happen to us or to those near and dear to us, surely there were also moments of happiness, glimmers of sunshine too. It seems to me, as I listen to people at the closing of every year that I hear more negative than positive. I wonder why that is. While the year ...

Baked Cinnamon Apple French Toast with Pecan Crumble Topping... What a sweet way to ring in the New Year for breakfast... That's right Christmas is over and now we look forward to ringing in 2016!
Need a breakfast for New Year's Day? Something that will feed a crowd? This is quite possibly the best French Toast you'll ever have! I was looking for a simple yet special breakfast to make on Christmas morning. Preparing breakfast the day or night before is all well and good but I'm usually taking care of last minute odds and ends and getting everything ready for Christmas Day. I didn't want cinnamon buns, coffee cake or croissants ...

DECORATING FOR THE HOLIDAYS NATURALLY :: WHEN A SIMPLE ORANGE BECOMES ANYTHING BUT
I've always been a fan of decorating with nature and with what we already have at our disposal. I also believe that a home can feel warm and welcoming and look elegant without going to great costs. A large bowl of fruit is not simply to be eaten, but can serve as an element of decor that is not only visually appealing, but one that is aromatic as well. The orange, while springlike because of its bright citrus color is perhaps the perf...

Architecture Crush... the A-frame
The iconic triangular style home called the A-frame was a popular form of American architecture that surfaced in the 1930s and peaked in the 1950s and 60s. This mid-century tee-pee style of architecture, defined by it's steep roof, front and rear gables and deep-set eaves, seems to be enjoying a new-found popularity. Numerous windows, both large and small, can be found on the front and rear facades allowing the interiors to be graced by...

Genius... Grinding your meat at home - even if you don't have a meat grinder!
Genius. Pure genius! A huge Jacques Pepin fan, I recently watched some clips of some of the older programs he taped on PBS, many of which were with the legendary Julia Child. I don't recall the recipe he was preparing but it called for ground chicken. He had, to one side, a KitchenAid fitted with the meat grinder attachment. To the other side was your standard Cuisinart food processor. The chef showed us how easy it was to grin meat u...

15 totally binge-worthy shows you totally have to stream this winter!!
On the east coast the Springlike weather and temperatures have finally bid us adieu along with the busy and demanding holiday season. You'll soon see just how easy it is to get lost in these shows and soon you'll be 3 or 4 episodes in without having realized it. This has become such a pheno...

I urge you all to wake up early, get out and watch the sun rise... it's truly a gift!
Have you ever seen anything so beautiful that it just took your breath away? I'm an early riser naturally but was awakened even earlier when my youngest crawled in to snuggle with me long before it was light out. Unable to fall back asleep I made a cup of coffee and went into the living room to admire the tree and all of Santa's hard work. My house sits atop a big hill and I have the most amazing views of the sun as it rises. This morni...

More on decorating seasonally, naturally... with pomegranates
I've fallen in love with the pomegranate. I love it for its beauty - its color and for the wonderful fruit-filled seeds that burst in your mouth when you bite into them, that add color and flavor to your favorite beverages, foods and snacks. The fruit itself so simple and yet so sophisticated and can add so much to your holiday decor, both on the table and around your home. We've seen so much done with cranberries over the years, but...
