Jeg blev meget inspireret af nogle rengøringsassistenters tilgang til deres arbejde da jeg var indlagt på hospitalet for 3 uger siden.

#1: VALUES
We look at values in different ways.

For most organizations, it’s a thing you put on a plaque on a wall in the office. It stays there, largely ignored by the leadership and employees, because the management team is only interested in meeting quarterly budgets.

#2: TALENT
Almost every single person that is at the top of their field identified their natural talents, and invested the time to develop them into a unique ability. It’s immediately clear when you talk to someone like that, they’re tuned in and they know exactly what their gift is.

#3: SERVICE
When you think of high performing, high impact individuals, people you look up to (living or dead), people who are genuinely happy and content doing what they do — chances are their work helps someone, and most likely a specific group of people.

A job with meaning, with sense, doesn’t necessary mean having a position at an NGO or founding your own social business because even these jobs can be meaningless. Also, it might not even fit your personality and abilities.

Basically, 'meaning' is a personal thing.

Meaningful work doesn’t mean you are going to be successful in the money department. If your hobby is playing music, writing, working out or whatever it might be, then you have to be elite at those things if you plan on making a living from them, and that is not the case for every single person who enjoys those activities as hobbies.

Meaningful work (and by extension, a meaningful life) is a balance between being and doing and a balance between self and others.

The end of work will not necessarily mean the end of meaning, because meaning is generated by imagining rather than by working. Work is essential for meaning only according to some ideologies and lifestyles.

Is Meaningfulness too great a burden to place on something you do for a salary, the thing you must keep doing if you want to keep eating?

In late 2016 +Maya Drøschler interviewed Steen Wung-Sung (Director, Customer & Process at Tryg), Anders R. Andersen (HR Manager at SKAT), Lars Ulslev Johannesen (HR Director at Netcompany A/S) and Me about our approaches to the employee experience.

Our team’s passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients, one at a time, is palpable both in the hospitals where we care for patients and for our business colleagues. This defines meaningful work to me. I feel very lucky and proud to be leading Sound Physicians.
