Jerri,

I just read where you have had some connection with Hearst. it is ironic, because dad had worked for William Randolph Hearst at the San Francisco Examiner, operating the Radio Station KUP scooping world news out of the radio airways Dad at the early age of 11 acquired his Amateur Radio License. Dad and his family had moved from Clear Lake or Desmoines Iowa and settled in the Bay Area of California in the late 20's. Dad at age 18 found a job as a radio operator on board one of the Dollar Steam Ship Lines. At age 18 and going to sea, one can say that he grew up fast! During his employment he had made 9 trips around the globe to the orient, Japan. Dad turned in a letter of resignation to the Dollar Steam Ships Lines then he found employment with Hearts at the Examiner. Hearst got tired of the radio Station KUP and closed it down. Thus dad had lost his job. Dad was one who never gets rattled by his life and what happens in his life.  Dad found employment with the Telephone Co. working in the switch board room. Pearl Harbor will be bombed by the Japanese. Dad knew our country was in need of radio operators, because dad was a radio operator with a 1st Class Radio License he knew that he would soon be drafted. Not wanting to be drafted, he enlisted and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant and then was sent to Miami Florida to Officer Training School, OTS. After his training being Army Aircorps he was sent to Asheville, North Carolina where he met mom. He knew as being Army Aircorps he was ripe to be sent over seas. He choose to be sent to his home, the Orient and was assigned as the Commander of a Radio Station in Manilla. A runner came from Gen. MacArther with a message. Dad gave orders to send the message. World War II in the Pacific was brought to an end. Thanks to the Atomic Bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima and dad giving orders to send the Surrender Message to Japan. Dad was sent into Japan, Tokyo to set up Radio communications for the 1st. Accupational Forces that would soon be landing. Dad returned home & married his wife. Sharon, Sister and Myself became their family.

If you want more information about this e-mail or my first e-mail to you, don't hesitate, please reply and ask. I have nothing to hide from you. I will be glad to send what information I know to you.

Thank you
Sincerely,
  Gene Martin
