Time to Start Preparing for Spring Landscaping

As winter is nearing the end as far as the calendar is concerned (We all know we are going to pay this spring for the nice weather this year). There are many things you can do to get up and running for the spring. This is the absolute best time to call your landscaper and get going on the spring and summer ideas and wish lists.

One: Some of the first things to think about is the clean up effort. This can be done even now with the type of weather we have been having. Cleaning the windswept debris from planting beds and bushes, replacing rock or mulch in the landscape beds, repairing lighting, trimming trees and bushes of certain varieties, and cutting plants such as grasses back. Pruning plants such as roses can be done in preparation for the summer months as well. The general rule is that pruning can be done in months that have an “r” in them. So you will want to have all of your outdoor plants, trees and shrubs pruned by the end of April

Second: You can look at infrastructure, such as decks, patio furniture, fences, and pergolas. Many of these may need to be sustained or repaired and now is the time to get on the list of contractors who will be booked out and full for the season.

Third: Think about the new color and trees you would like to have. Now is a good time make a plan and get trees ordered and placed before they bloom. Some trees will have a much better survival rate if planted before they “wake up” for the season. Bulbs are a good thing to get ready now as well so when soil temps and spring rise up from the winter slumber they are ready to grow.

Fourth: Water, even though it seems crazy with the lack of moisture this year we are going to be behind the eight ball in the water department. On these 50 degree and warmer days it is a good time to give the yard and plants a drink. NOW with that being said I would NOT recommend turning the sprinkler system on. Use a good old fashioned hose and watering can and be sure to REMOVE the hose from the house each and every day to make sure that you do not have a faucet freeze and leak into your house.

Fifth: Grass, weather permitting, now is also a good time to rake the yard out and prepare the grass for the new growing season. Once we get a bit closer to spring (March – April are good) you can even rake some new grass seed into your lawn. With a little water and sun this seed will start to grow rapidly. You don't however want this seed to start growing then be hit with a big freeze. It will kill the new grass plants and waste your time and money.
