Last week was about wrapping up old experiences. This week is about prepping for new ones. I believe I'll order a hammock and fit that in somehow.

So...I'm an avowed cheapskate. I am, after all, my grandfather's grandson (Duke would be proud of me). I'm always looking for another way to make things better, faster and cheaper. I don't like the id...

Today should've been better. No use in complaining, now that it's behind me. Watch out tomorrow - I know you're related, and I'm coming after you with a vengeance your kin inspired!

Making sure that there is room for my kid's presents in the vee-dub while packing it up to head north for Christmas makes me feel like some weird reverse Santa.

Despite cheating at Olive Garden this weekend, the battle of the bulge continues in my favor.

Plenty of picnic tables, a playground for the kids, the Pacolet River for taking a quick dip (or to cool down dogs!), basketball/tennis/soccer/baseball courts and fields and 2+ miles of paved walkways (which are used every morning and evening by bikers/runners/walkers for exercise, as well as those just needing a stroll). The area is mostly flat, which makes for a very easy walk. Just take into consideration that you're walking near a river and remember to bring mosquito repellant.

The good: I'm a southern boy by heart, if not by birth. I really enjoyed the tomato pie appetizer. For northerners who may not be familiar with it, think tomatoes au gratin, but tasty! The wine list was impressive and the mojitos, perfection. The bad: Although I'm a southern boy by heart, my palette is pretty sophisticated...I know when you've put a canned beef gravy over some potentially amazing lamb loin. The few untouched pieces were amazing; they were done exactly to order and the rub they were covered in was perfect for the meat. The gravy, sucked. The mashed potatoes had potential - there was a hint of garlic and 2% milk. Had they simply switched the milk for cream and loaded the potatoes with garlic, one could over look the mismatched gravy. The low down: I went with several other people who are of smaller appetite than myself. They ordered, what they considered, very good food from the appetizer menu and went away full. I could have very well stopped at the tomato pie and gone home full, but, I am a bit of a glutton. Go for the appetizers and the drinks. It's a nice atmosphere.

Josh & Astrid (and all of the other family at Dogwood Farm Kennels) are awesome. I don't board my dogs anywhere else. The first time I took my dogs to Dogwood Farm, I knew my vet's suggestion was right. The Kennels are clean and more than spacious, well heated in the winter and well ventilated. I don't think I've ever smelled that "typical kennel smell" while I've been there - which I think is important for dogs who have been to other kennels and potentially had a bad experience. The outside "yard" for dogs is HUGE. The dogs have the better part of (my estimation) an acre to play on all day and always come home happy and exhausted, but reinvigorated as any good vacation will do! My dogs know the drive to Dogwood Farm by heart, and as soon as we turn off Route 9, my Husky mix starts talking and telling me how excited he is to be going back. I'm sure yours will too.

Went mid-May. The food was ok, but I'm pickier when the meals are $15+/person. I had a gazpacho and a tuna burrito (which was admittedly better than expected - decent sized chunks of grilled tuna and an ample serving). The gazpacho was over spiced (i.e. more hot sauce than necessary) and the burrito was under spiced (i.e. bland, but still good). They try to serve a mexi-caribe fare, but haven't got a handle on the spice. I'd have rated it higher if the prices were 25% lower - it's really decent boardwalk food!
