The world speaks thousands of languages, but you wouldn't know it by looking at Twitter. You can help change that by sending out tweets in your #MotherLanguage on February 21.

Prime Minister Harper’s dangerous new elections law would deny hundreds of thousands their right to vote. Time is running out and we need to ramp up the pressure. Click here to email the committee studying the bill and your MP, demanding they kill it unless major changes are made.

Our managing editor +Solana Larsen did a great job getting +Flipboard to add the Global Voices translation sites to the content guides for non-English users of their app.

One of our main goals has always been to be among the top sources of international news in the languages where there aren't as many options as in English. This recognition from Flipboard is a great sign and hopefully their international users will enjoy our stories :)

The Zone9 case proves that in Ethiopia, international human rights standards -- and even national law -- are employed or ignored as political powers please.

Are advertising and surveillance inevitable flaws of the web? I'm tempted to think Marshall McLuhan was right on this one and the medium is the message: The web is free a free medium by default, so the default content is free, which means advertising, which means surveillance.

Great analysis and historical context (he invented the pop-up ad for Tripod!) from Global Voices co-founder +Ethan Zuckerman
It's not too late to ditch the ad-based business model we have and build the web we want.

What provoked the army to launch a coup in Thailand? Are Thais supportive of the coup? Will elections solve the crisis? What is the situation of the media? #ThaiCoup

Perfect explanation! Wish I'd seen this a year ago, would have resulted in a lot less need for revising all my previous estimations. Certainly this is vital when comparing prices of crop-only lenses (like Fuji/MFT/EF-S) to full frame ones.

Happy 25th birthday to the WWW! We did a GV Face Google Hangout to celebrate, and it starts with my ultra-brief description of the difference between "internet" and "web" punctuated by my cats wandering in the background :)

Story
Tagline
A human web developer from Montreal
Introduction
Jer does web development with a bachelors in Communications from Concordia University in Montreal under his arm.

His primary field is PHP/XHTML/CSS development using the Wordpress platform to build websites using existing, modified and custom plugins and themes. He also does integration between open source PHP platforms but mostly leans on his Wordpress skills.

He believes pretty strongly that Open Source (and Free Software) is the way to go for a lot of reasons. He tries to fix things for the greater good when he can, but he's not always confident that his original code is worth releasing to the public.

He works on some different contracts sometimes but mostly on http://globalvoicesonline.org, where he is in charge of code and design.

He also plays the ukulele for fun but people usually tell him to stop.

He DOES NOT play World of Warcraft, because that game is evil and ruins lives.
