Finally got with the times and upgraded my 5200rpm laptop HDD to an Samsung 750 EVO 500GB SSD this weekend. Benchmarks before and after show a 5x faster read, and 4x faster write. Totally worth it. The responsiveness is epic now. Note: my laptop only supports SATA II, so YMMV.

Also used this upgrade as an opportunity to do a fresh install to Linux Mint 18 from 17.3 on my old HDD. Haven't had any issues with it, and everything is set up (that I can remember I needed).

Well this is interesting. ICANN to pick up DNS control.
After almost two decades of deliberation, the US government confirms it is on track give up its control of the internet's naming system by October.

In a dangerously flawed decision unsealed today, a federal district court in Virginia ruled that a criminal defendant has no “reasonable expectation of privacy” in his personal computer, located inside his home. According to the court, the federal government does not need a warrant to hack into an individual's computer.

I knew that the capability to hack a home computer was easily done, I'm just really sad to hear that it is now legal.  I really wish lawyers/politicians understood technology at least a little bit.

Despite what the article says, this ruling kills our 4th amendment rights, and now sets a precedent that Constitutional rights can be bypassed for National Security.

Want!
A hero by the name of Mr. Kernish has managed to assemble a full-size version of the Galactic Empire’s All-Terrain Scout Transport, or AT-ST for short, which you might have seen at the battle of Hoth or patrolling on Endor. It’s an impressive feat that gets so much more impressive when you see what it also does.

Using +Shotcut to put together a video for my Church. It's a pretty good video editor. Just some advice, it will crash on you occasionally, so make sure you save often. And when you are exporting, do NOT touch anything else in the app until it's finished.

Android: Google’s keyboard packs a ton of simple gestures, but you could miss them if you don’t know they’re there. For example, if you want to move your cursor, swipe left and right across the space bar.

A KrebsOnSecurity story last month about credit card skimmers found in self-checkout lanes at some Walmart locations got picked up by quite a few publications. Since then I've heard from several readers who work at retailers that use hundreds of thousands of these Ingenico credit card terminals ...

Very timely since the Feinstein-Burr anti-encryption bill was just released. And before you argue that they aren't proposing no encryption, watch this video. You cannot have a lock that opens for certain unauthorized individuals, and not others. And no matter how much they promise their ability to break and will be kept safe and secret, remember this is the same government that has lost millions of personal records over the last few years.

I love how concise and easy to understand he puts complex ideas into a digestible video segment.  I'll be sure to pass it on.

Rain water collection  -

Big news for Coloradans!

The Colorado House and Senate passed a bill to allow each household to collect 110 gallons (two 55-gal drums) of water effective Aug 10. The bill still has to be signed by the Governor, but he's already stated that he will. This is a big win for Coloradans for family water conservation efforts and family emergency preparedness.

After more than a year of trying the Colorado lawmakers passed legislation Friday to make it clear rain barrels are OK under state water law.

Customer service skills don't exist here. Don't expect a warm welcome when visiting or a reassuring conversation when you call for an update. Visit Apex or RMCP instead.

This is a very clean range (it better be, it's new!), with friendly staff. We went on a busy Saturday, but was able to get right on the line shooting. They sell target stands there, for a decent price, but if you have a 1x4 and cardboard laying around your house, you can throw one together simply enough. They also sell targets there if you run out or forgot to bring some.
