Specializing in distribution, digital marketing, social media, and marketing strategy consulting for the global travel and tourism industry, Jens Thraenhart has over 20 years of international hospitality marketing and operations experience, spanning positions in rooms and food and beverage operations, revenue management, strategic planning, and e-business for such companies such as Four Seasons, Ian Schrager Hotels, Kempinski Hotels, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, and Marriott International. Jens is founder of Digital Innovation Asia (DIA), a new initiative promoting excellence and knowledge sharing when it comes to leveraging digital, social, and mobile in the travel and tourism industry in Asia Pacific, strategically aligned with PATA, and endorsed by the UNWTO, ASEAN, as well as NTOs in Asia.
In 2009, Jens Thraenhart co-founded Dragon Trail Interactive, an award-winning travel technology and digital marketing company that assists travel companies to market to affluent Chinese consumers via innovative influencer and viral marketing techniques leveraging technology, Internet, and social media channels. In 2012, Dragon Trail launched its own travel social media website, Tripshow.com, which in a unique way helps travel organizations connect with sophisticated Chinese travelers. To educate the travel and tourism industry about the tremendous opportunity of China, he founded China Travel Trends, an online resource, magazine, and community, organizing seminars such as the “China Travel Social Media Forum”, and publishing publications such as the annual “Essential Guide to China Travel Trends Handbook”. Previously as the Executive Director of Marketing Strategy and Customer Relationship Management for the Canadian Tourism Commission, he oversaw e-marketing, campaign management, and customer relationship management. Previously, he was the first Director of Internet Strategy for Fairmont Hotels & Resorts as well as Marketing and CRM for Fairmont’s Vacation Ownership division, and helped the company win multiple prestigious awards in website design and online marketing.
He founded and or chaired various tourism events and initiatives, such as the HSMAI Internet Marketing Strategy Conferences (USA, 2003-2005), the Online Revealed Canada Conference (Canada, 2006), the Canada-e-Connect Strategy Conference (Canada, 2007), the Canadian e-Tourism Awards (Canada, 2007), Arab Online Marketing Conference (Egypt, 2008), E-Tourism Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Bhutan, Thailand – 2011-2013), China Responsible Tourism Forum (China, 2011), and the Travel Leaders Symposium on Sustainable Tourism, Myanmar (Bagan/Myanmar, 2011). He has been a member of various advisory boards, including the Global and Americas Board of Directors of the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI), and the International Federation of Information Technology in Tourism (IFITT), chaired the Cornell Hotelier Alumni Chapter in Canada, and founded the HSMAI Travel Marketing Special Interest Group (2003), and the Canadian e-Tourism Council (2006). An avid blogger, he also published and co-founded the TipsFromTheTlist book and blogging community (2007), and created Blogger Match-Up, an innovative model to bring top bloggers and citizen journalists to Asia and match them up with travel and tourism organizations (2013).
With a passion for sustainable tourism, he has been an expert consultant for PATA, UNWTO (most recently on a mission in DPRK/North Korea), Mekong Tourism, and SNV on how to leverage social media and digital marketing for capacity building and responsible tourism development, especially in developing countries. An Affiliate Member of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), currently he is the founding chair of the PATA China Chapter and strategic advisor to PATA and Mekong Tourism (MTCO).
Regarded as a thought-leader by his peers, he is listed as one of the ‘Top 25 Most Extraordinary Sales and Marketing Minds in Hospitality and Travel’ in 2004 and 2005, and is recognized as one of the ‘travel industry top 100 rising stars’ by Travel Agent Magazine in 2003. He is frequently quoted in industry trade magazines, and speaks at travel and tourism conferences all over the world.
Jens holds an MBA-accredited Masters of Management in Hospitality from the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, and a joint Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the University Center ‘Cesar Ritz’ at Brig, Switzerland.
