Hey Friends,

Well, it took me just about the same amount of time to write all of my blog posts as it did to ride PBP itself! (It's hard to believe that I was crossing the finish line just a week ago today.) I decided to spread out the text and images into seven posts -- that way you can choose what to skip in my rando magnum opus. The one I'm linking to here is the closest one to a full recap. Hope you enjoy reading about my journey!
If you were a new randonneur and asked me what's the most important thing I've personally learned in my nearly three years of partaking in this endurance sport, I would answer: it's the company you keep. Now there are randos who prefer to ride alone, some who will ride alone if need be — but I'd ...

Hey Friends -- Here's the latest ‪#‎CAmatters‬ video I produced for The New York Times Opinion and the University of California; Mark Bittman chats with UC Berkeley's Saru Jayaraman about fair wages for restaurant workers.

VIDEO: Watch the latest episode of ‪#‎CAmatters‬ featuring The New York Times Opinion contributor Mark Bittman and UC Berkeley's Saru Jayaraman.
In just a few years, the issue of labor in the food industry has gone from being largely ignored to drawing the attention of the entire country.

I especially love his last point, about the original reason for the 2nd amendment. And I would add to it that the American government is already tyrannical in a lot of ways, and trampling all over the constitution, but I haven't seen any wide-spread movement by the 2nd amendment crowd for armed revolt.

THE FINAL FRONTIER
So here we are. The LAST day. Should be noooo problem. Day 4 had the lowest mileage of the ride (150 miles), was pancake flat and maybe we'd even get some tailwinds for a change. Then again, this was supposed to be an “easier” 1200k and we were certainly disabused of that notion very quickly on ...

Here's Day 2!
So at the end of Day One, we arrived at Jupiter just before 12:25AM and our rando sextet was really looking forward to getting some precious off the bike time. I'm no RAAM type, so a shower, fresh change of kit and couple hours' of sleep is all I need to feel the magical powers of quick recovery ...

I qualified for Paris-Brest-Paris this weekend -- WOOHOO!
SPOILER ALERT: I'm now officially qualified for the 18th Edition of Paris-Brest-Paris! I'll be packing my bags for France in August in the hopes of becoming an ancienne. This past weekend, the SLO Randonneurs hosted the final event of their inaugural ACP series: the Pinnacles Travel 600k.

Hey Friends,

Here's the latest ‪#‎CAmatters‬ online video that I produced for the UC and the The New York Times Opinion featuring Mark Bittman and UC Berkeley / Berkeley Food Institute's Claire Kremen. It's about the importance of pollinators to our crops; you can watch it online now. And check out the other videos in the series here: http://www.nytimes.com/video/bittman-california. My final video will premiere in September.

Also, my contract gig with the UCOP is up, and I'm returning part-time to KQED next month to support Bay Area Bites -- so stay tuned for more food stories coming your way this fall!
Mark Bittman strolls through a Northern California farm with UC Berkeley’s Claire Kremen as she explains why pollinators — especially wild honeybees — are essential for crops.

Thanks for the update! I caught myself up on the videos last night. I was disappointed by  how low the view count was.

Had so much fun at this year's inaugural L'Eroica California ride! Check out this video from GiroSportDesign -- you can see me "crushing" it at 1:24. ;)
L’Eroica is an event that celebrates the romance of cycling’s past

Day 3!
Previously, on The Californians: When we last saw our frotchy heroine, she'd just been given a key to her own hotel room after Day 2's 184-mile ride. Whooooooooweee! So guess who got 5.5 hours of blissful, dead-to-the-world sleep? This lucky gal! I felt totally rejuvenated and was rarin' to take ...

Finished my first 1200k this weekend, yee haw!
1200 kilometers, or roughly 746 miles, is the distance of the most heralded event for randonneurs: Paris-Brest-Paris. If you're able to finish a full series, you just might aspire to complete this historic ride someday. When I first began riding brevets back in 2013, I had no notion or desire, ...

And here's photos from Day 1 of L'Eroica California!
I was in vintage bicycle heaven at the first annual L'Eroica California this past weekend in Paso Robles. Ever since I first heard of this event several years ago, I've been entranced by the romantic notion of paying homage to the past through this cycling celebration. It's like the Renaissance ...
