Phew, a jam-packed weekend of fun!
Phew, it was a jam-packed weekend of fun! First, a big posse of us (Frankie, Jason, Kat, Paul, TBO, Wilson and myself) rode from Lafayette up Diablo; then TBO & I headed to Del Valle for an awesome camping trip organized by fellow rando Brad; then Ann, Denise and Jason met me on Sunday morning ...

Loved the ride to the junction.  And so glad we didn't go on to Mt. Ham!

Many of you know about my quest for a vintage, period-correct bike that I could ride for L'Eroica down in SLO. Sadly, the seller in Minneapolis was asking too much for the chrome Schwinn Paramount I had my eye on (I noticed she's since dropped the price considerably, but it's still above what I wanted to spend.)
Then this beautiful Pinarello popped up on eBay! It's an '85 Record frame painted in a "Metal Rose" color with chrome details (chain stays, dropouts, fork crown) that was built up by a shop in the South Bay. She came equipped with a full Campy Super Record group, Cinelli bars and stem and Mavic rims, so in a way, she's coming back home! (Apparently the owner rode her in a few local centuries and the Death Ride.) Thanks to Shawn for going through the pain and suffering of wrapping the bars "harlequin style" (another item that's been sitting on my bucket list for a long time), to Pudu for giving it a tune-up and to Evan for selling me a lovely TA Specialties water bottle cage and pump holder (just need to find a pump...)
“My vintage-Italian-period-correct-bicycle dreams have come true! Meet my new-to-me #Pinarello, which I'll be riding in the upcoming #leroica down in SLO.…”

Q&A with Anna Lappé

We recently caught up with +Anna Lappe at a talk she gave at +UC Santa Barbara. In a riveting and far-ranging lecture, “Ethics at the End of Our Fork”, Anna spoke about the myriad ways in which the food system impacts our lives. Comedy Central confirmed in a statement that Mr. Stewart, the longtime host of the satirical news show, was giving up his post, but said he would remain at the helm until later this year.

A heartbreaking story -- from both sides of a crime.
One teenager flicked a lighter, and two families’ lives were changed forever.

I think the clothing manufacturer should be brought into court. There's no way that clothing should have caught fire so fast like that. Seems like the injuries were mostly from the clothing burning so quickly.

That being said it was a stupid 16y/o thing to do. It was even more stupid to take the bargain. Kid should have gone to trial and begged the victim and witnesses to just not appear at trial. Then the kid pleads not guilty, and the DA is left with no testimony to go forward with. Case dismissed or kid acquitted. The time he served and the process to get to that point would be lesson enough for the kid and for the community.

even if the victim did show up I don't see a jury sentencing the kid to so much time. The DA knew it too, which is why they pushed the plea bargain.

I had low expectations for my 400k down in SLO since I was recovering from the flu -- but I think it was the best brevet I've ridden so far!
This year, as I chose the brevets I needed to qualify for this year's Paris-Brest-Paris, I mixed up my itinerary again and considered events outside of San Francisco and Davis. Fortunately, the San Luis Obispo Randonneurs, a new club led by the human dynamo Vickie Backman, was offering a full ...

+Dave Bartel Totally understand; I'm being really frugal these days since I have several bike trips planned for the future. But we'll be waiting for you whenever you can come out here! Send me a link for your fundraising campaign, too.

This whole trend fascinates me...#foodporn

"In #Korea, people can tune in on their laptops and cell phones any time, any day and watch people eat—and talk about eating. These “online eaters” are neither chefs nor restaurateurs, but the stars of the South #Korean digital #food phenomenon: Mukbang."

Another fine journalist who will be greatly missed has departed for the big newsroom in the sky...RIP
Mr. Carr, a shrewd and well-informed skeptic, wriggled away from the demon of drug addiction to become an unlikely name-brand media columnist at The New York Times.

I did 67 miles through the Delta last spring. It's not bad once you are soaked through, I actually didn't mind it. Good job!
