In a nutshell...I don't "do" status quo.
Social enterprise. Entrepreneur. Social media/PR strategist. Journo. Change agent. Activist. Founder of "WTF? (Where's the Funding) for Lung Cancer?" social media campaign. Chocolate.
I began my career in 1997 as a TV news reporter for KMTV-Channel 3, the
CBS affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska. While working on my master’s degree
in journalism, I became an intern at KMTV, working as anchor/reporter
Deborah Ward’s protégé. After Deb wrote and edited her stories, I
pieced together my own version of the story and aggressively approached
the news director to continually critique my work. A short time later,
I was hired as a full-time general assignment reporter.
After three years in the news business, I made the transition to the “other side” - public relations - where I became press secretary for Omaha Mayor Hal Daub. In 1999, Mayor Daub’s approval rating among the voters of Omaha was at 32%. Nearly 2 ½ years later, despite his losing bid for re-election, my team helped catapult the Mayor’s approval rating to nearly 70% among Omaha voters.
Following my political stint, I jumped into agency life, where I built a public relations department at Ervin & Smith Public Relations and Advertising in Omaha from zero to four full-time employees in nine months. I was privileged to work on prominent accounts, such as Ameritrade (now TD Ameritrade), Lindsay Manufacturing, HearthStone Homes, among others.
I moved to Swanson Russell, Nebraska's largest advertising, public relations, communications firm in 2004 as Public Relations Counsel. I was promoted to public relations manager at Swanson Russell associates due to existing client and new business growth. I created a public relations department (Omaha office) from zero to five full-time employees in three years.
I provided PR/social media strategy development and execution of comprehensive public relations programs, primarily in consumer and business-to-business categories, for a wide variety of clients, such as Land O Lakes Purina Mills, Schering-Plough Animal Health, Creighton University Medical Center, Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc., among others.
