I just ordered an Amazon Fire TV box. I figured I have just about every other TV-connected device out there I may as well have one more. I'm curious to try it out and see how it compares and fits in with my Roku, GoogleTV, TiVO, Chromecast, and native TV apps.
Apple and Roku have a new competitor in the living room. Amazon just announced its own video streaming device: the $99 Amazon Fire TV. It starts shipping today. "We need to invent and simplify on...

I love stuff like this. Old meets new is sometimes unrecognizable, but in historical cities like London, it's pretty cool to see relics of the past living among the modern.

Amazon is raising the annual fee for its Prime membership to $99. This is still less than $2 per week for free 2-day shipping, unlimited streaming of their Prime Instant Video service, and access to lots of free Kindle books for up to 4 different members of your household. Any way you slice it, it's still a great deal. (TIP: If you aren't already a member, you have 7 days to sign up for the next year at the $79 annual fee.)

I'm not usually one to comment on a celebrity death, but I was so sad to hear about Phillip Seymour Hoffman's yesterday. I've been a big fan of his work for many years. I never felt like I was watching him playing a role, but that he just was the role. Which is a pretty big accomplishment considering the breadth of roles that he took on over the years. I had the good fortune to see him perform live in "Death of Salesman" at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York City in 2012, which was spectacular. His is a raw talent that will be missed – a life gone much too soon. RIP.

Love this story. There are so many interesting uses for this type of technology in the medical field.
Google Glass can be used to check emails or search for information on the move. It can also apparently be used to save lives. The Boston Globe reports that Dr. Steven Horng, working at Boston's...

Last month I experienced a full day of hot air balloon fun in the middle of winter in Hudson, Wisconsin. This "Hot Air Affair" is an annual winter festival that I hope to attend again as it was a lot of fun, and a nice opportunity for photos. It was rather overcast on the day I was there, but the wind was good so the balloons were able to launch. Google was nice enough to make a little auto-awesome video for me of the photos I took via my phone and Google Glass. I'll post photos taken with my "big camera" sometime soon as well.

Interesting... And yeah, I'm part of Minnesota's apparent love of Daft Punk.

Best donuts in the Twin Cities. These donuts are nothing less than amazing. They are made fresh every morning and come in a huge variety of types and flavors from traditional raised glazed to maple bacon long johns, and other gourmet combos. The donuts are also preservative-free, and they nut-free (no peanuts or tree nuts!) Make sure to get there early for the best variety.

One of the best breakfast places around! My recommendations are: 1. Omelettes. Done souffle-style and big enough to share. The Santa Fe has some zip, and the OPH is excellent. Choose the buttermilk pancakes for your side -- it's a full short stack. 2. Oven Pancake. The Dutch Baby (oven pancake served with lemons and powdered sugar) is my personal favorite. 3. Hot Chocolate. Made with real chocolate and real cream. Need I say more? 4. Bacon. It's thick cut and flavorful. 5. Hash Browns. They're mixed with onion and cooked just right. (not all OPH locations have hash browns) This place is always busy, so be prepared to wait. The decor is dated, yet fitting. The main dining rooms are more fun to sit in than the back overflow room.

The food is always delicious and the service always great. Reservations are a good idea as they can get quite busy – lots of business dining happens here.

The Pioneer Museum is a quirky little museum filled with all kinds of interesting artifacts and stories, focused on the original pioneer settlers in western Hennepin County. The museum has several rooms, which are organized into similar groups of items (music, textiles, general store, etc.) The building used to be the Long Lake school house – the old Long Lake school tower house bell from 1880 is one of the artifacts on display. The Pioneer Museum is only open on Saturdays and admission is free.
