Why do we evangelize?  In which I talk about the hazard that bugged me most in my tour through evangelical world, and that I think is a reason Catholics are terrified of the Gospel.

This Saturday on Outside the Walls with Timothy Putnam: Me, talking about The One Big Mistake people make when they're trying to get Pope Francis news.  And a whole lot more.

"So what this means is that there’s only six months more until Christmas, because St. John is six months older than his divine cousin.  This is why Hobby Lobby has all that Christmas stuff out — if you’re planning to make wreaths or ornaments or something for all your friends and neighbors, get going now so you aren’t like us, who proposed an inter-cousin ornament exchange and then promptly failed to participate because we can’t get our craft act together.

"The advanced warning is the point of the feast, the point of the saint.  Not to help you manage your craft situation (thought you can use it for that, too), but to assist with your Christ situation."

Pope Francis tosses off a set of seemingly contradictory pronouncements on weapons manufacturing and just warfare.  If you can understand three principles behind his rhetorical style in that confounding paragraph, Laudato Si' is a piece of cake.

The afternoon of May 23rd I had to reluctantly admit that what I was determined to call “allergies” was really a cold.  If noses run in your family like they do in mine, you can appreciate the difficulty of telling the difference. It was this mild cold…

There's a reason a handful of intelligent, educated Catholics just decided to overthrow the Catholic faith . . . and that reason is us. There will be no religious freedom so long as we continue to disregard what our religion actually says about the formation of souls.

"I’m going to be very blunt.  Pastors and religious educators lament that they cannot offer one-on-one discipleship because they have no mature Catholics to carry out the work . . . and then they continue to pour every parish resource into a system that has proven it cannot produce mature Catholics.

"We’re terrified of trying something new because it requires taking energy and money away from the system we have, and what we have is keeping the pews more or less full.  But what the pews are full of is the spiritual equivalent of neglected children being raised in one of those horrible orphanages where you’re lucky to still be alive in ten years.

"If you want to raise mature Christians, you must do the things it takes to raise a mature Christian."

On human rights, symbols, and our growing loss of liberty:

"We have become such a symbol-heavy culture that we no longer see the humans anymore.  The people are all just symbols.  Our reasonable love of flags has morphed into an irrational hatred of the human beings who symbolize something we dislike."

Why withdraw from civil life before it's necessary? An even simpler solution to the sacramental bind that same-sex marriage laws pose for the Church:

"But what if we were to treat our sacraments as something that Christian souls seek when they are earnestly desiring to know, love, and follow God?  What if, when someone presented themselves for a sacrament, we were to take them seriously in their request, no matter how utterly unready for the undertaking they seemed to be?"

Can't get volunteers? Even the disciples aren't turning out to evangelize?  Could be you have community problems.  Deep structural problems that no amount of homilies or bulletin announcements or moral improvement can fix.

Linking around on all things mercy and patriotism.  Confederate flag talk, Erin Arlinghaus on speaking out against bigotry, and why the locals aren't so much surprised as nodding our heads at the gloriously merciful behavior in Charleston.
