This week I took a photo that wasn't initially intended to be a part of this series, but wound up being a greatly realistic picture of my son and I. It made me realize something...

I don’t know if I come across as one of those people who have it all together. I hope not. I mean, I try to keep it real and let you know that I suck at cooking for my family and my house is usually a wreck. My husband and I don’t always agree and […]
This week in photography I realize the best moments aren't always the prettiest. Here's how you can learn to capture THOSE meaningful moments.

Yes, I'm black. No, you're not colorblind. But you know what? That's ok!

Every once in awhile I’ll have a generally well-meaning person tell me they don’t even notice I’m black. “I’m color blind,” they say. I personally believe this statement is coming from one of two places. Either one where they’re trying to defend…
Every once in awhile I’ll have a generally well-meaning person tell me they don’t even notice I’m black. “I’m color blind,” they say. I personally believe this statement is coming from one of two places. Either one where they’re trying to defend themselves from the appearance of being racist. Or (more commonly) in an attempt... read the rest.

Whether you're busting out your big girl camera, or snapping with your cell phone, take some time to slow down and notice when those ordinary moments are asking you to cherish them.

When is a good time to take a second to stop, and capture a moment? I think each part of the day holds special moments for each of us. Many of them are so ordinary we might not even notice them anymore. This week I paused at different times in the day to…

A question from my biracial daughter has me asking: Do little white girls ever wish they were brown? Or has society’s showcase of beauty made that a rare request?

“I like that picture of me as a baby mom, my skin was nice and white,” my daughter told me last week. “What?” I asked her. Thinking I heard right, but hoping I didn’t. “My skin was white, I wish I could go back to that,” she clarified. “Your skin is…

A birthday party recap and a look at my old AND new vision board!

I’ve mentioned before how much I was dreading turning 30. Well, I found the perfect way to ring in a new decade, with a new vision board! A vision board (also known as a dream board) is a tool used to help you achieve your goals by having them displayed…

When multiracial parenting gets awkward. A conversation about MLK between my white husband and our biracial daughter.

When it comes to teaching our kids Civil Rights history, I’ve seemed to have done most of it so far. So I was amused when I overheard a conversation about MLK Day between my white husband and our biracial daughter. He says: You need to start getting ready…

Dinosaurs and 3 year olds: The struggle is real.

I’m trying to plan an awesome birthday party for my soon-to-be 3-year-old. Some of my friends tell me their almost-3-year-olds have given then all of the details of where they want their party to be, and what kind of theme. Lil’ J was like that before her…

It's not often I create something totally Pinterest worthy, so do me a favor and pin the heck out of this!

When my mom first moved to Austin she rented a home less than a block away from a railroad crossing. Every time we visited Granny he’s run over to the window to watch the trains go by. This would happen at least twice an hour. Then, we went to Disney…

It’s like I’ve traveled back in time to having a newborn. Except my kids are 4 and 2 and I’m not lactating. I’m dealing with a toddler regressing in potty training, so bad I just bought another pack of diapers. And he keeps waking up in the middle of the…

How cherishing the moment is helping me love my kids, even when they're driving me absolutely nuts.

In the short time since I’ve started this little project I can see it changing the way I think. It has been more than just a challenge for me to take at least one photo a day. It’s turned into a coping mechanism when my kids are driving me up the wall.…

Before I turned 30 I finally did 2 things to solidify my adultness.

I know we officially become adults when we turn 18, but for some reason I feel like I’m just now hitting the official adult age… 30. I mean 18, 19, you’re still a teenager, and in your 20s you’re figuring stuff out. Once you turn 30 it’s like ready or not…

If 365 days is too daunting, try these ideas. Plus, a look at some of my favorite moments this week.

I know, it can be daunting to commit to a project that takes all year. The thought of a photo a day–What if you forget? What if you miss a day? What if you’re starting late? Listen. It’s never too late. First off, this year is a leap year, so you get an…
