Merry Beltane everyone. I hope you celebrated properly last night. ;)

Today, and last night is an ancient holiday celebrating the middle of the year, spring and fertility.

Here is a little blurb from Wikipedia;

Beltane or Beltaine ( /ˈbɛlteɪn/) is the anglicised spelling of Old Irish Bel(l)taine or Beltine (modern Irish Bealtaine [ˈbʲal̪ˠt̪ˠənʲə], Scottish Gaelic Bealltainn [ˈbʲal̪ˠt̪ˠənʲ]), the Gaelic name for either the month of May or the festival that takes place on the first day of May.
Bealtaine was historically a Gaelic festival celebrated in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Bealtaine and Samhain were the leading terminal dates of the civil year in medieval Ireland, though the latter festival was the more important. The festival regained popularity during the Celtic Revival and remains observed in the Celtic Nations and the Irish diaspora.
In Irish Gaelic, the month of May is known as Mí Bhealtaine or Bealtaine, and the festival as Lá Bealtaine ('day of Bealtaine' or, 'May Day'). In Scottish Gaelic, the month is known as either (An) Cèitean or a' Mhàigh, and the festival is known as Latha Bealltainn or simply Bealltainn. The feast was also known as Céad Shamhain or Cétshamhainin from which the word Céitean derives. Beltane was formerly spelled 'Bealtuinn' in Scottish Gaelic; in Manx it is spelt 'Boaltinn' or 'Boaldyn'. In Modern Irish, Oidhche Bealtaine or Oíche Bealtaine is May Eve, and Lá Bealtaine is May Day. Mí na Bealtaine, or simply Bealtaine is the name of the month of May.

According to Nora Chadwick, in Celtic Ireland "Beltine (or Beltaine) was celebrated on 1 May, a spring-time festival of optimism. Fertility ritual again was important, in part perhaps connecting with the waxing power of the sun, symbolized by the lighting of fires through which livestock were driven, and around which the people danced in a sunwise direction"
In Irish mythology, the beginning of the summer season for the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Milesians started at Bealtaine. Great bonfires would mark a time of purification and transition, heralding in the season in the hope of a good harvest later in the year, and were accompanied with ritual acts to protect the people from any harm by Otherworldly spirits, such as the Aos Sí. Like the festival of Samhain, opposite Beltane on 31 October, Beltane was also a time when the Otherworld was seen as particularly close at hand. Excavations at Uisnech in the 20th century provided evidence of large fires taking place.

Nice!! Very creative!!
Here in Germany May Day is celebrated by worshipping our latest tin god by washing it and changing tires. Right now people seem to have dinner. Seems to be a rather shabby compensation for wild dance and sex rites. :)
... Врёте вы всё в би: о: копью терихи змерыломеж .. спинокио перегоревший головёшкапустой.в промеж..хомо за ца пенис.
Happy Beltane to you. Sadly I have no one to celebrate with this year but I hope others manage to.
All Celtic festivals were stolen by Christianity and changed into something else
I am currently reading the Mists of Avalon - great timing :)
This so should be on What's Hot. in so many ways.
These Eight words the Rede fulfill:

"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"
I like the picture!Who is the painter?
+Vir Pineda I am not sure, I tried looking it up but it's been used so much in so many iterations on the internet I fear it's a bit lost.

This must be Adam, and his Wife Eve. nice! (smile)
woww ...this picss es looking romantic..
wawooo nyce love a true love storyy
If you want your children born in Late January... tonight's the night.
This reminds me of Helmut Braig. So while a clearly different artistic approach - the motive seems to be similar.
never lookin i like this picss true love story.)
Undoubtedly one of those times getting a Woody is anticipated ...
No, it's not Adam and Eve whoever thinks so is wrong.

It's a depiction of The Horned God (sometimes referred to as Cernunnos, though no one is really certain) and his lover.

Just a lover. It's a day celebrating fertility and Spring. It's about sex and renewal. Make no bones about it. It has nothing to do with modern religions.
Interesting. I'm a Scot, living in Ireland and I have a French girlfriend - goanna head up and see her and we'll celebrate our delightful fertility together straight after work!! (was that "too much information"? oh, well 'tis written now....)
that kind of art is nice and has a classic touch.

It's show the love of tree.So we must save the trees and protect our environment from polluation. It's good 4 our life.
+Jennifer Bailey "It's about sex... Make no bones about it". Haha. I see what you did there.

[/puerile humor]
My wife was just talking about fertility and the need for us to get away.
+Vinay Singh Nothing vulgar about love, sex, beauty and nature. They are all a part of us as we are of them.

Very cool, so that's why they call it Mother Nature!
Very Erotic, I would love to have a print of that photo

Hurray hurray, it's the first day May! Outdoor lovin' starts today!
Last night was also the anniversary of the death of Edgar Rice Burrough's grandson Danton. It's kind of ruined it for me.
A beautiful piece of art. Wow! Its great.
+Dajon White Just a google image search for Beltane, actually. I also back-searched the image to try and find the painter, but through 2 pages of Google Search results it yielded no luck. It's a very popular re-posted image, so the original got lost.
It fills me with wonder. But i like it
I love this, if someone actually carved this it would be amazing.
The entire story is interesting. Based on Spring and purity and fertility with a new beginng for the year. Also for a good harvest at the end of the year and protection from the otherworldly spirits.
I'm Irish....I don't remember any of that!!

isn't photo shoot is an adventurous work?
From a person that has celebrated his fair share of Beltanes and has since returned to his original concept of a Christian God, I wish to bless you and celebrate with you the living forces of Nature, made by a divine Hand.
Celebrated as it was on the 1st of may and as per the wheel of the year the essence of fertility and renewal!
May God bless you and treat you with the wisdom of delighting in creation!
thanks for sharing!

it is the true which can not desappear by any wind of society............
yeah that's artistic but I feel strange coz that seems like a man and a women?
natural love,how romantic and true!
Obvious parallels with some Greek poetry - the story where Apollo falls in love with a nymph (because of an arrow shot from cupid) and chases her until she calls out to her father to turn her into a tree.
unique, inspiring, envied and obtainable love at its finest.
Sal Y

Blessed Beltane to you and yours.
All in for loving this picture, damn thats creative <3
Amazing pic! Excellent way to demonstrate your NATURE'S PASSION!!!
this is pretty artistic. I love good art.
Is that your trunk, or are you just happy to see me?
I always remember this little rhyme

"Hurray, Hurray the first of May
Outdoor sex begins today"
paganism pure and simple.
apparently you can't get pregnant if a) you do it standing up b) it's Beltane and c) you are also half-tree. but that does look like Paganism, pure and simple.
thanks for sharing this information with us...
It is at it's core satanism.
Bill gates wants reduction of population and a ban on pornography. Bipolar Marlyn manson supports this.
Mike - I'd say that it has its roots in satanism, but has since branched out into paganism pure and simple. I think this kind of thing encourages casual sex between half-human, half-arboreal youth
Awsome picture, wud make an great tattoo.
If there was a lack males the government would open artificial embroyos for cancer.
Can't be paganism if she is receiving federal grants because it has nothing to do with religion.
I like so much, because i love the nature and the sexuality
Wow, loads of negative comments about the photo. It's a celebration of fertility - the picture is possibly of the Ard Fedo (if my Gaelic isn't too rusty) or the nobles of the forest.

Before people get too prudish, let's remember that May Day celebrations have children dancing around a phallic pillar, the Washington monument is also phallic, Easter is full of fertility aspects (chicks, eggs, flowers). Sex is a part of nature, people.
real trees love..dont cut them.,
MS Bailey, Me mither who taught Gaelic in Eire in the '30s &40's & admits to have forgotten much of it but who also rattled off the months of the year says that Beltaine is Gaelic for April & that in Galway she never heard of this celebration. Like I said, she's 87 & has forgotten much. I will be looking it up 'cause me pater (from Tipperary & gone these 23 years) never mentioned it either & we celebrated holidays in Northern Virginia with many unaligned Irish immigrant families. I would be interested in your reply to my comments & can be reached @ "ahardrainisgonnafall" on Yahoo Messenger
This is a strange day. I listened to Celtic Woman music, which I only do maybe once every 3 mos. Then I casually run into this posting from 20 days ago, and it is beyond just beautiful. Serendipity? I must be cross wired into the ether of the Celtic World. Great Fun, thanks for the post.
This is Very Nice. I like.
nice art......keep it up
dont mind critics they are always their 4 a purpose
