Composite shot... I usually go dark & dreary for these but played around for a lighter almost high key version this time.

So a special treat by +Joe McNally at his recent St. Lucia workshop... Photoshop 101. Whazzat??? Joe knows 'shop??? Lol ok for back story keep reading...

We shot some bikers in the jungle one day and for this particular setup we had to pan but the shooting window was small and my speedlights ended up in the shot. +Drew Gurian was helping our group and said something along the lines of that being an "easy fix" in post (keep in mind time is limited, these bikers are exhaustingly doing these runs again and again, we've already had a couple bad spills and several other photogs need to get their turn still) so I agree, could fix the prob in-camera but i get the idea of the panning lesson, call it and hand off to the next shooter.

The next morning we critique the shots and Joe asks what I think of that one, I say it kinda sucks 'cause I caught the lights and it's also underexposed overall, but Drew told me it's an easy fix! Lol :-) So Joe (a.k.a. Dr. Get-it-right-in-camera) gives Drew the evil eye, says "ok let's see then!" and proceeds to pull up CS6 as all of us 14 or so attendees look on in astonishment.

A few colorful expletives later, Joe had spot-healed the speedlights out and as you can see here in this video, had found his way to a levels adjustment layer (or as he called it, "one of these f-ing tools down here") and fixed the underexposure issue.

So, breaking news, Joe actually can use Photoshop!!!

I've read near every book and taken every tutorial and/or workshop he's put out, and don't think I've once heard more than a gleaming reference to anything regarding post (other than maybe a little raw processing ...basic sharpening, curves, etc) so for myself and the other St. Lucia attendees it was quite amusing to learn Joe could spot heal, or you know, even open CS6 to begin with! ;-)))

But then looking at his LCD screen in St. Lucia as he demonstrated for us how he would shoot each scene, you kind of understand why he doesn't need it! Seriously glad I took this class, f-bombs and all ;-P

Practicing multiple exposure techniques learned from a Joe McNally tutorial (through Kelby Training). Pain in the butt to set up for the shoot but definitely fun when it starts to come together!
