“This is the beauty of a design career: you have the opportunity to create what you feel is missing from the world. There wasn’t a site for the hybrid designer/developer/content person, so I created one.”

It's my COMMUNICATION ARTS interview.

Mo' languages, mo' problems. Getting plurals right in localization is a tricky prospect—each language has its own rules, and exceptions within those rules. How can we scale our websites and apps to respond to our global audience? Tingan Ho shows us how MessageFormat lessens some common pain points in the pluralization process.

Multi-platform design is hard. Decisions about content structure and hierarchy are often made hastily, with little foundation in reality. In this 60-minute video, caught live at An Event Apart Orlando 2014, Sarah Parmenter says it’s time to stop slavishly aping the latest UI trend. Instead, let’s design with data, producing designs and systems that yield predictable and desired results.

Roadmaps are born of all sorts of compromises: between committing to a plan while remaining agile; between giving product teams autonomy while aligning their work to business goals; and between improving existing software versus getting new stuff out the door.

http://www.mindtheproduct.com/2014/07/experiments-roadmapping-gov-uk/
Roadmaps can be a powerful tool to communicate the vision for a product’s development, unite teams of makers around common goals and let stakeholders know (roughly) when they can expect the improvements they care about. That’s why everyone loves a good roadmap. But getting them right is hard. Roadmaps are born of all sorts of …

Approaches that are either too general or too specific can easily overwhelm practitioners—and derail budgets. Fresh from recent experiences with two large-scale redesigns, Katie Kovalcin suggests that flexibility and open communication can transform all team members into what she calls “80/20 practitioners,” creating a more effective balance of time and resources.

Good governance is worth pursuing: clear policies and processes can answer questions, empower teams, and enable web strategies to shine.

http://alistapart.com/article/stopping-the-infighting-about-digital-standards
Organizations that struggle with their digital presence often do so because they haven’t established proper governance. But good governance is worth pursuing: clear policies and processes can answer questions, empower teams, and enable web strategies to shine. In this excerpt from Chapter 5 of Managing Chaos, Lisa Welchman explains the importance of digital standards—what they are, why they matter for governance, and how to start documenting them...

  • An Event Apart
    Co-Founder, 2005 - present
An Event Apart is an intensely educational two-day learning session for passionate practitioners of standards-based web design. If you care about code as well as content, usability as well as design, An Event Apart is the conference for you. Dedicated to the proposition that the creators of great web experiences deserve a great learning experience, An Event Apart brings together twelve of the leading minds in web design for two days of inspiration and enlightenment plus an optional third-day workshop on topics like multi-device design, responsive web design, content strategy, CSS3, and HTML5.
  • A List Apart, for people who make websites
    Founder, Publisher, 1998 - present
Leading the field since 1998, A List Apart (ISSN: 1534-0295) explores the design, development, and meaning of web content, with a special focus on web standards and best practices. We publish big ideas by outstanding designers, developers, writers, and strategists.
  • A Book Apart
    Publisher, Co-Founder, 2009 - present
Web design is about multi-disciplinary mastery and laser focus, and that’s the thinking behind our brief books for people who make websites. We cover the emerging and essential topics in web design and development with style, clarity, and, above all, brevity — because working designer-developers can’t afford to waste time. A Book Apart publishes highly detailed and meticulously edited examinations of single topics. We produce brief books of about 100 pages — the perfect size in terms of subject depth and coverage for topics like HTML5, CSS3, content strategy, responsive web design, and more. The goal of every title in our catalog is to shed clear light on a tricky subject, and do it fast, so you can get back to work.
  • Happy Cog™
    Founder, Chairman, 1999 - present
At the height of the dot-com boom, when "good" websites were inaccessible Flash-powered broadcast- and brand-oriented, ludicrously expensive vanity projects, I founded a design studio that was user- and content-focused, used web standards to make content accessible to all and to push what could be done in open-web-based design. Today we have offices in three cities and work with some of the smartest clients around.
