Investing in precious metals is "a thing."  Investing in the stock market ... analogous to gambling.  The only difference is how long it takes to loose.
+Paul Lagle buying random crap in the blind hope of selling it later for a higher price to a bigger fool is a sure way to lose money. Investing in a company whose performance you've studied and whose prospects for future profit appear good is a reasonable way to make money. Most of the people who lose money in the stock market are buying random crap based only on the movements of the stock price. They would lose their money anywhere. The venue makes no difference to the outcome. Wealth is the product of intelligent human action, not random human action.
