So I got my Coolest Cooler in July, took it to my Grattan race and the blender (and all the electronics) died after the first three seconds of use. Coolest thought it could just be the battery (even though it showed a full charge they said they'd had a relatively high number of failures), so they sent a replacement and here's the first test. Sucess!

VSCDA Vintage Grand Prix Au Grattan XXX - Formula Vee Saturday Heat Race

Of all the vintage racing weekends I do, Grattan is the one that has the most races. Saturday has a Heat race (this video) and two Sprint races. Then there's the Feature race on Sunday, and another Sprint race in the afternoon for those of us who can't get enough.

Given that there's 5 races over two days, my thoughts going into the Heat race were, "take it easy, this is a warm up. Figure out the pace and then use it in the later races this weekend."

If I'd have known the Sunday Sprint race was going to be the only other "dry" race of the weekend I might have approached this differently. As it is, it's still a pretty entertaining race. I gain a couple of spots on the first lap but then get passed by the draft train on the main straight during lap 2 and drop all the way back to 12th.

I don't have the best exit out of turn 8 on lap 2 and am not really in the draft on the straight, but by the middle of the lap I'm still hanging with the front runners so I figure try to keep in touch and see what happens with everyone else (again, first race of the weekend).

I get faster as the race goes on and sure enough, folks start to drop out. Guy Dennehey goes off track at turn 3 on lap 7 (11th), I get by Mitch Beiser on lap 8 (10th), Eric Coppock coming out of turn 3 on lap 9 (9th), John Kennelly drops out on lap 10 with a throttle cable issue (8th) and then coming out of turn 8 I pass Bill Styczynski and Frank Newton and end up in 6th.

I hang on to Jerry Baker for the last lap, pressuring a little to see if something opens up, but Jerry's been here before and just hits his marks and we finish that lap as we started it, 5th and 6th respectively. Behind us there's quite the battle for 7th between Frank, Bill, Mitch and Eric. If there had been another lap I'm not sure how we all would have finished!

So the heat race turned out to be the best session of the weekend for me. I didn't go out for the next Sprint race as it was pouring rain, then the rest of the afternoon was cancelled to to some serious tornado warnings. The Sunday Feature race was run in mixed conditions (mostly wet!), video of that race is coming next, and the final Sprint race started off with a damp track and apparently I gave it too much respect, as everyone else drove off like it was dry and I ended up racing by myself the entire time (I finished 5th, but its to dull a race to post).

Even with all the crazy weather it was still a fun race weekend, there's no other track like Grattan in the mid-West!
