NASA released a new version of the Deep Field image day before yesterday, now with even more detail. From the caption:

"The image covers an area less than a tenth of the width of the full Moon, making it just a 30 millionth of the whole sky. Yet even in this tiny fraction of the sky, the long exposure reveals about 5500 galaxies, some of them so distant that we see them when the Universe was less than 5% of its current age."

Space is so awesome.

I saw this! Man, I've been using the stats from the HUDF picture for years during night hikes at LOC and 100 Elk. The source I read about this new XDF from said that there were over 10,000 galaxies present in the picture, but maybe they meant 10,000 unique objects, about half of which are something besides galaxies. Oh well for second- to fifth-hand science news. Boop! Space is the best.

Nexus Q first look is up. I'd love to get my hands on one of these at some point. $299 is pretty steep, but it'd be cheaper to hook a Q right up to bookshelf speakers than to buy an A/V receiver.

Well, that wasn't too bad.
Facebook just removed everyone's email address from their profile and replaced it with an @facebook.com email address without asking you. Here's how to easily fix the problem.

Best headline I've ever seen for a phone review. The review itself is pretty helpful, too!

Gizmodo got a hold of an Apple Genius training manual, which turns out to be kind of a creepy document. My favorite part is the subtle redirection Apple uses to correct mistaken customers. Giz described it as verbal "judo," which seems pretty accurate.

Every so often I hear people asking about why the government funds NASA (in other words, "Why are we putting robots in space when we need to focus on creating jobs here on earth?"). This site does a pretty good job of explaining why: because throwing science as far forward as we can turns out to have some pretty concrete terrestrial benefits, as well.

This is an incredible website. Just like a month ago a friend of mine said something like "I don't get what the point of space exploration is. There are so many problems here on our planet, why are we wasting our resources on looking at other ones?" and I was so apoplectic that I stammered and sputtered and didn't have a very coherent response, but after a couple minutes I recovered myself and said basically "Lots of stuff that NASA made has gone on to benefit society!" and she said "Like what?" and I said "I dunno!?...Rubber pants?!" But now I have some ammo in my space defense bandolier.

Guys: can we quit it with the frivolous lawsuits? I hate the idea that Apple and Samsung have to use their money to fight these dumb legal battles, rather than funneling it toward R&D.

Ooh, pretty excited for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Baked-in predictive keyboard, useful notifications, Google Now keeping me from being late for things ... can't wait. Not sure how I feel about the Nexus 7 tablet, though. How is it different from a Kindle Fire?

Looking forward to a potential contest between Apple and Google for mapping superiority. The Android version of Google apps is fantastic already, and if heat from Cupertino forces Google to improve it even further I'll be a happy guy.

I think I'll throw my lot in with whoever gets around to 3d mapping the beautiful sites of downtown Williamsport, PA. While entirely reasonable and expected, it really bums me out that most digital mapping innovations tend to affect like, NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Boston. I won't be satisfied until there are 3d models of the trees around Alford Hall.
