Latest USA Drought Monitor is out. In spite of recent rain/snow in parts of OK & TX, extreme and/or exceptional conditions persist. Almost no change for CA, NV, and OR.
U.S. Drought Monitor. The U.S. Drought Monitor is unique, blending numeric measures of drought and experts' best judgment into a single map every week. It started in 1999 as a federal, state, and academic partnership, growing out of a Western Governors' Association initiative to provide timely ...

If you love your pet, don't leave him unattended in the car. That's the message from the American Veterinary Medical Association, which reports persistent tragedies resulting from pets left alone in vehicles. In one recent case, a California man left...

Hollywood special effects have nothing on the Logan Co. OK wildfire that burned out-of-control Sunday afternoon & evening. Watching the live stream from media helicopters was a jaw-dropping experience.
A sweltering pool of hot air set up over the Southern Plains this weekend, smashing records in Kansas and Oklahoma, and stoking wildfires.

Crowdsourcing - the future of weather forecasting?

"There’s a tremendous sense that people enjoy having this capability and want to be connected and want their car to be part of a larger system that can alert them in return. You can be told through various apps that the wet weather that you’re going through turns to ice 15 miles ahead. That’s information that you as a driver can then use to decide what to do; to stop or take a different road. . . ."

UCAR President Tom Bogdan talks with Forbes contributor Bruce Dorminey:

As meteorologists debate the recent spate of truly bizarre weather, consumer computer technology and weather apps are already changing day-to-day forecast models. But how can such tech help us live with these new weather extremes? For answers, Forbes.com turned to physicist Thomas Bogdan, President of UCAR (the University Corporation for Atmospheric [...]

WOW... check out the horrible mess at Cheaha State Park, atop Alabama's highest mountain. Incredible ice storm! A big shout out to park employees who have been stranded up there for these pictures...

When the going gets tough...
If there's so much snow that you can't get over it, can't get around it, you might as well go through it—and some people are digging tunnels to do just that.

From Salt To Salary: Linguists Take A Page From Science #npr
The basic ideas of language evolution are similar to those of biological evolution, explains guest commentator Wim Hordijk. So, linguists are able to utilize the tools of evolutionary biologists.

This is awesome! Citizen Science is now in the Oxford English Dictionary!
At the end of June, I noticed a tweet about new words in Oxford English Dictionary (OED): I like dictionary definitions, as they help to clarify things, and OED is famous for the careful editing an...

Introduction
Owner/administrator of  Tornado Quest and its associated social media, citizen scientist, scientific method advocate, rational freethinker, and earth science fanatic. I'm a major league weather geek (and yes, I'm a storm chaser/Skywarn spotter & have been since March, 1982) with particular interests in mesoscale meteorology, numerical weather prediction, climatology & climate change, storm damage surveys, social ramifications & reactions to impending severe weather, and long-term social/psychological effects of major disasters on mental health. Other interests include being an avid recycler, sustainable living, and leaving this humble planet we live on a better place for future generations. My other interests include astronomy, evolutionary biology, paleontology, science education, art history, portrait, figure, and fine art photography, silent, foreign, & classic (pre-1960) films, KISS memorabilia, and online privacy/security issues. I'm quite adept with a 35mm or 120 film camera...and the bass guitar...the latter of which I love to play at high volume with sloppy, but good intentions.
Bragging rights
Proud father of planet Earth's most awesome daughter! She's my pride & joy, is headstrong, autonomous, creative, intelligent, pragmatically analytic, and graceful in her own unique way. Being a good "daddy" for her is the most important job I'll ever have. She takes after my wonderful wife Susan...who has never met an obstacle she didn't tackle by the horns.
