This image was captured at Land’s End, the most westerly point of mainland Cornwall and England. It was really great standing there to watch the sun slowly set while listening to the waves crashing onto the beach below me. I was right at the edge of a cliff and had this view all to myself that evening. It was all very serene. This single image and the light are straight out of the camera (SOOC), so I have not manipulated it in Photoshop.

Moonlighting!
This image is of Botallack Tin Mine in Cornwall, right down near Land’s End. If the image looks different to you, it is because it was captured at 2:00am in the middle of the night, and the scene is entirely lit by an almost full moon. There was no need for extensive colour correction since moonlight is just a reflection of sunlight, so this image was captured/processed as daylight white balanced. No filters were used in capturing this image. The waves were quite strong that night, but the very long shutter speed of just over 16 minutes smooths the wave motion to a nice blur.

Female flies, sculpture by Guy Baudat.
Chateaubrun at the heart of the valley to wolves the castle of giants.
Chateaubrun Castle is an impressive medieval fortress built on a promontory on the bank of the river Creuse in Cuzion, Indre, France. This Bronze Age castle is now being restored and is home to many monumental sculptures by Guy Baudat. Chateaubrun is not a showroom dedicated to the art market since his sculptures are not for sale. Many consider his unusual creations to be beyond the edges of good taste. Guy Baudat works outside the system in an artist’s semi-underground milieu beyond hype and against all odds.
The fortress is open to the public just one day a year during "Heritage Days" when the sculptor and potter presents his monumental works to the public. Guy has kindly given permission to those participating in my French photo workshops to visit and photograph his castle and his unique sculptures.
This Sculpture ‘Female Flies’ is in bronze and stainless at a height of 8 meters in upper part of the courtyard overlooking the Creuse river.  The scale is based on the sky.  At its peak, a woman bird without wings. Full technical details of the image can be found here:

This image of a sunset was captured during the ‘Forgotten France’ photographic workshop this spring. The location is just around the corner from the gîtes we stay at in Villeneuve near Crozant. The workshop was so much fun. A great group of photographers, fantastic subjects, fun times and the delicious food did not hurt either! Full technical details of the image can be found here: http://www.elmstudio.com/potw/201i.html

The colour changing lights on the beach side of the Hot Walls in Old Portsmouth, Hampshire. The Hot Walls are part of the fortifications of Portsmouth, and they are extensive given the city’s strategic location on the English Channel and its role as home to the Royal Navy. For this reason, Portsmouth was, by the 19th century, one of the most fortified cities in the world.
As a modern port city, Portsmouth sees many ferries arrive and depart each day connecting the south coast of Britain with France, the Channel Islands and Spain.  Of course, many also go back and forth to Ryde on the Isle of Wight.  The light streaks on the left of the image are from an Isle of Weight car ferry that is entering Portsmouth Harbour. Foggy morning over Cockle Pond, Walpole Park, Gosport, Hants. Originally a mill pond coupled to Gods Port (later to be called Gosport) Creek in the reign of Charles II and is shown on maps from 1678. It was changed into a cockle pond in 1751. Later the pond was renovated specifically for model yachting and to accommodate a model yacht club. Walpole Park was created in 1869 on the area known as The Horsefield, which was used previously by the army for exercising horses from St Georges Barracks. This image is of Argenton-sur-Creuse, in central France. I was standing just a little way up the Creuse River using a very bright Led Lenser P14 flashlight to place some light on these buildings for a small group of photographers. The extra light was needed to enhance the reflections in the river. I was operating my camera by remote control while trying to smoothly light paint the facades during the long exposure. It is a great town with lots of potential locations for a night shooting session.

The image is of the full moon by Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Spinnaker Tower soars 170 metres above Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent; the tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben and has established itself as a national icon for Britain. A world class visitor attraction, the viewing tower gives visitors a sweeping  view of one of the most interesting seascapes in the world. Situated on the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays, it offers amazing 350º panoramic views of Portsmouth Harbour, the South coast and the Isle of Wight, with views stretching for up to 23 miles. It is breathtaking by day and a glittering sea of colourful lights by night.  Full technical details of the image can be found here: http://www.elmstudio.com/potw/204i.html

I’m just getting ready to leave for the autumn Forgotten France Photography Workshop so this week’s image was captured during this spring’s workshop. I was reviewing some of the images I had shot and this church interior looked spectacular. It is the church of St. Sylvain at Bonnat, interesting externally as a fortified church, but as you can see it is also very elaborately decorated internally. Charolais cattle in France captured during the last ‘Forgotten France’ photographic workshop. I am leaving today for the next one and have been so looking forward to it as last year’s workshop was so much fun. A great group of photographers, fantastic subjects, fun times and delicious food did not hurt either! Full technical details of the image can be found here: http://www.elmstudio.com/potw/200i.html

This was captured at dawn looking over the weir at the end of Southwick Park Lake in Hampshire. There is a good strong flow over the weir due to all the rain we have had lately. I had gone there with Mark and Oliver to shoot the sunrise across the lake but prefer this earlier image which is almost an hour before the sun could be first seen through the trees. Slamming the Door!
Looking across at Durdle Door, which is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset, England. The name Durdle is derived from the Old English word 'thirl' meaning bore or drill. These were the worst conditions I have ever photographed in as the winds were gusting to over 90mph! Luckily they were coming off the sea toward the land or I would not be here today. With the wave and spray you may need to look carefully to actually see the large arch in the stone formation on the right. I was invited to this location by a couple of friends who are also keen photographers which was great as I would not have had the courage to do it alone. To get an idea of the size and scale of the waves, look at the size of the people on the cliff top at the left. After almost 30 minutes of being sandblasted, then a hail storm began so we packed up and started the large climb back to the car. Within minutes I was totally soaked! Thank you, Mark and Andrew, for the really wild day out! Full technical details of the image can be found here: http://www.elmstudio.com/potw/196i.html

Introduction

Over the past fifteen years I have really enjoyed teaching photographic workshops in USA, UK, France, China and Costa Rica. I have taught workshops for The Photographic Society of America, The Royal Photographic Society and The New York Institute of Photography. My images and articles have been published extensively in PhotoPlus Magazine, but some have also appeared in Practical Photoshop, Digital Camera, TechRadar and other publications in Europe, USA and China. I really enjoy helping other photographers, and I would be pleased to support your learning through one-on-one coaching or small group workshops.  Elm Studio is the company name and my web site URL.
