+allison chaney alexa or compete could probably give me information on the web portion (not mailing lists, though), but I don't know how far back they keep their data. I also think they wouldn't be able to see things like the fraction of 2002 slashdot readers that became 2010 hn readers because I don't think they have user identity over such a long time period.

Yeah -- and unsubscribing or filtering (usually my preference) a mailing list is a lot like stepping away in position.
