Great morning at PCL going over some new systems with their wonderful staff. I need to visit this library more often as a patron. :-)

New API from the Federal Register -- I'm trying to think of interesting uses of the data/API, other than "something in the Federal Register matched keywords you're interested in". Perhaps that's simply one of the the best things you can "do" with this?
Building on the groundbreaking efforts of GPO’s bulk XML data feed, we’ve released an Application Programming Interface (API) for FederalRegister.gov, making it even easier for developers to build new...

This post does a good job of communicating a concept that I find myself repeating often, even if only in my own head.

"we must fight the urge to re-create our own places using the exact same formula that worked somewhere else"

Interesting article on Michigan cities (including Traverse City) engineering whitewater courses on existing rivers to attract kayaking tourists.

This was the first I had heard of the efforts in Traverse City, though I see now the project is in the early investigation stages for the Boardman River just east of the Union Street dam.

I also liked how someone linked to a related (thesis?) paper which they wrote, even if the dspace URL did look a bit like spam at first.
There is little Mother Nature failed to provide in Michigan for those who love being active on the water. With more than 13,000 inland lakes, 36,000 miles of streams and rivers, and, of course, the ...

Interesting. Toxic algae bloom in Lake Eerie, lots of sediment in the Southern part of Lake Michigan. The other thing that caught my attention was the apparent difference in foliage between the Northern and Southern portions of the lower peninsula. nasa++

Traverse City is featured today in a set of slides on the New York Times website: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2011/08/07/travel/07surfacing-traverse-city.html

Nice photo credit, +Gary L. Howe!
Traverse City, Michigan
Traverse City, best known for its cherry products and wines, has a growing culinary and arts scene that shows there’s more to the region than orchards and vines.
