Simulated views of the Moon over one month, demonstrating librations in latitude and longitude

The Moon always keeps the same face to us, but not exactly the same face. Because of the tilt and shape of its orbit, we see the Moon from slightly different angles over the course of a month. When a month is compressed into 24 seconds, as it is in this animation, our changing view of the Moon makes it look like it's wobbling. This wobble is called libration.

The word comes from the Latin for "balance scale" (as does the name of the zodiac constellation Libra) and refers to the way such a scale tips up and down on alternating sides.

The most noticed monthly variation in the Moon's appearance is the cycle of phases, caused by the changing angle of the Sun as the Moon orbits the Earth. The cycle begins with the waxing (growing) crescent Moon visible in the west just after sunset. By first quarter, the Moon is high in the sky at sunset and sets around midnight. The full Moon rises at sunset and is high in the sky at midnight. The third quarter Moon is often surprisingly conspicuous in the daylit western sky long after sunrise.

I already feel like Sherlock is very Moffit-esque.  Adding Smith would just make me feel like I was watching Dr. Who again.

Steven Moffat has said he would cast Matt Smith in Sherlock if there was "a perfect part for him".

In an interview with Zap2it, Moffat said that while he is wary of "stunt casting", he is not opposed to Smith joining the detective drama.

"Nothing is impossible, but it's not something we're particularly striving for," he explained.

"There's enough inevitable crossover talk between those two, [so] it might be disconcerting for [Matt Smith or Benedict Cumberbatch] to appear in the other's show."

He said he would only cast Smith in Sherlock if there was "a perfect part for him."

Moffat continued: "Stunt casting doesn't work, so it would have to be just because he was overwhelmingly right for it."

"I love working with Matt. He's a phenomenal actor. I'd jump at the chance to work with him again. I just don't know how likely that is to be on the set of Sherlock."

Sherlock Series 3 concludes on Sunday (12 January) at 8:30pm with 'His Last Vow', and Doctor Who returns in Autumn 2014 on BBC One.

Wrong. There's no timey-wimey in Sherlock. Obviously.

Cool!

Doesn't seem to want to find my devices, though.  :^(

Dude, there's my phone! Android Device Manager is now available at www.android.com/devicemanager. It’s a new service that makes it easy to locate a misplaced device.

Found mine without a problem. The nitpicker in me says that it wasn't as accurately located as it claims. The pinpoint was a good 50m from where I'm actually located. (It claimed accuracy to 16m.)

Fireworks around 6:30 tonight!

Fast CME Earth impact! expected around 00:38 UT on Jan. 9, 2014. The CME associated with the X1.2 flare was clocked at ~2400 km/s. This is 8.6 million kph or 5.3 million mph. Estimates are for a geomagnetic storm up to moderate or severe (Kp 6-8) so we could get some fantastic aurora! Here is the computer simulation from the NASA Space Weather Research Center. credit: NASA/SWRC

Coronal mass ejection.  It's like star spit-up.  This particular CME was big and happened right in front of our 'scopes, which means it was launched right at the earth.  It can cause electromagnetic interference with satellites and the power grid, cell phones, etc.  And make pretty lights in the sky.

Good location and hours, fairly modest selection. It's not huge but the staff is helpful. Would be nice to see more micro breweries added (no Bell's, Ska).

Full of sugary and salty sauces, poor quality meats. Can get a lot of poundage for the dollar if you're just shoveling it in, I suppose.
