Stunned and shattered by the faith that infuses this letter: "I remember mom always telling me that all in all in the end the only one you really have is God.  I have come to a place in  experience where, in every sense of the word, I have surrendered myself to our creator b/c literally there was no else…. + by God + by your prayers I have felt tenderly cradled in freefall.  I have been shown in darkness, light + have learned that even in prison, one can be free.  I am grateful."

As Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests continue, my exclusive interview with Joseph Cardinal Zen, the bishop emeritus of HK. He talks about martyrdom, the corruption of Chinese culture, and Pope Francis's optimism about China.
As pro-democracy protests continue to roil Hong Kong, Joseph Cardinal Zen, the Roman Catholic bishop emeritus of the Chinese territory, slams the local government, denounces the culture of mainland China, frets about the future, and asks the world for prayer. An exclusive interview.

I interviewed Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York about her new book, in which she writes to a surprising degree about her Christian faith. We chatted about why, the inspiration she draws from the story of Esther, and her staff's go-to verse in times of trial.
In her new book, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand opens up about her Christian faith. And in an exclusive interview, Gillibrand discusses why she chose to write about it, how her faith has transformed her journey, and the Bible verse that has become a touchstone for her team

Three #Ferguson  pastors shared their hopes and their fears as they tend to their flocks in these difficult days. "I want you to pray for justice. I want you to pray for reconciliation. I want you to pray for restoration,” Traci Blackmon said. “But I don’t want you to pray for peace. We don’t need peace right now—we need unrest.”
Three Ferguson pastors—two black, one white—reflect on the turmoil that has erupted in their community and revealed its divides. What do their flocks need now? What are they praying for? And what are they doing to try to change things for Ferguson’s future?

My debut in the NYTimes Magazine: an offbeat profile of a small-town Alabama lawyer who may be the most successful beauty-pageant coach in America. Let me know what you think!
Would-be beauty queens flock to this lawyer-by-day for lessons on poise, beauty and, above all, doing better in that pesky interview segment.

So here we are, with winter descending, on the fourth Sunday of Advent--the Sunday of love. It couldn't have come at a better time, because, clearly, we so need love. A subversive love. A disarming love. An otherworldly and neighbor-honoring love. An active, hope-filled, life-giving love.

We're taking you to the streets today for a look at the protest signs that have popped up across Hong Kong, from "Don't be a minion" to a Chinese take on a Jack London epigram.
The signs reflect the passionate diversity of expression of tens of thousands of people fighting for their freedom.

You may recognize Mary Engelbreit's anodyne, cheery, inspirational art—it's all over greeting cards and totebags. Then she created an image inspired by "hands up, don't shoot." I talked to her about why she did it, the fans it has cost her, and the long-lasting lessons about fairness and justice that her Catholic parents taught her long ago.

Today's lectionary readings are so timely for all that's happening in our world, from the plight of Christians in Iraq to the unrest in Ferguson. We heard about Joseph, cast out by his brothers but upheld by God. We read aloud a psalm of unity. We wrestled with a story of Jesus honoring a marginalized woman's faith.

If you're in Connecticut, join me, Chris Stedman (author of "Faitheist"), and Justin Lee (author of "Torn") on Tuesday, June 24, at 7pm, at the Mark Twain House in Hartford. We're going to be talking about Christianity and homosexuality. The organizers—not the three of us—are calling the conversation "The Gay Christian Conundrum." But is it even a conundrum? Hope to see you Tuesday!
