Peeved that MacPorts won't build on my Mac, which makes no sense at all since any of that stuff I wanted to run, I would run in a Linux VM.

Homebrew wouldn't build either. Fortunately the people who do the Dia packages build a .dmg on a Mac that DOES have MacPorts, so now I have Dia with a useful mouse cursor, which is better than you get running Ubuntu in Parallels. And now I probably won't care about this issue for another five years.
Got homebrew working, to the extent it works. Mildly pissed that it doesn't include vim.
Not sure what you mean, OS X includes Vim 7.3 in the box, if you want MacVim you can do `brew install macvim`
