The results of a bountiful harvest during the beautiful fall season. The rich colors offered by the various fruits and vegetables gathered during fall offer an unmatched tapestry of visual sensations.

A view of Half Dome from Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park. Amazing how a little water and ice (ok, a lot of water and ice!) could carve such a massive valley out of granite.

This has inspired me to file my own patent.

I am filing a patent on the process of sweeping the central region of the anterior part of the hand, located superficially to the metacarpus, in a parabolic motion centralized on the the synovial hinge joint between the humerus in the upper arm and the radius and ulna in the forearm in such a manner that the transverse metacarpal arch strikes the the plate-like portion of the squama frontalis of the skull creating a brief echo of the sound of skin contacting skin.

That's right folks, I just patented the face palm! After reading this, I'm sure many of you are already in violation of my patent and I'll be seeking restitution. My lawyer will be in contact with each one of you soon. :)
Last week, we reported on the news that Amazon had actually patented the age-old practice of photographing things against a white background. This led to m

Study Break by Jeff Burton captures the fleeting moment we all look forward to where we can remove our glasses, rub our eyes, and take a minute to retract and relax from a long study session.

The base of the Lake Falls in Matthiessen State Park where Deer Park (Matthiessen) Lake drains into the Upper Dells of the main canyon. A number of small streams have carved out a little labyrinth of gorges in the sandstone of the mile long canyon. With a little rock hopping across the stream and a wall hugging climb along the steep wall of the canyon, you can get quite close to the base of the Lake Falls where this image was captured.

Left these vistas behind this morning to return to Peoria. Had to post at least one photo I captured with my point and shoot camera. (For all the point and shoot haters out there, I just got one thing to say. Neener, neener, neener...) Film developing will have to wait until tomorrow cuz I'm way to tired to start that process tonight.

I'm late to the posting party, but it's been a heck of a week. It was freaking cold standing in the snow and ice covered yard but I got a shot of the #bloodmoon. The bright white star to the lower right of the Moon is Spica and the bright orange ball near the right hand edge of the image is Mars.

Nice image Jeff. It was cold and cloudy here in Paducah, but no snow/ice.

Little Sable Point Lighthouse, a white brick tower 107 feet tall, stands on a point about 10 miles south of Pentwater, Michigan. The lighthouse was built in 1874, and the automated light shining from the tower is fixed and flashing white, the flashes being of 40,000 candlepower every six seconds. The late evening light and misty overcast weather adds to the dramatic look and feel of this image. The original image was captured on Kodak Tri-X black and white film which adds the characteristic film grain that enhances the image giving it a classic black and white feel.

Story
Tagline
Each day I try to make the impossible possible.
Introduction

If you are reading this, you are probably (A) looking for the NASCAR driver Jeff Burton, (B) hopelessly lost after an Internet browser link clicking frenzy, (C) looking for my observing log to complete your astronomy class homework, (D) sent here by my wife to keep an eye on me, or (E) looking for me to  tell you a little about myself.

I have spent the past thirty plus years in the electronics/computer industry in various capacities. When I am not geeking or enjoying family time, you will see me with a book, camera, or telescope in my hands. These are my sanity restoration tools. Books bring me knowledge and the occasional techno-thriller story (Tom Clancy rocks!). The camera is my creative outlet that allows the seldom-used right side of my brain to kick into gear. The telescope allows me to keep in perspective my place in the vast universe so I do not get too full of myself.

Bragging rights
I have written operating system software and recorded it on paper tape and punch cards. I have repaired computer systems by replacing bad vacuum tubes. My mom let me stay up to watch Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the Moon. I survived a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in the Aleutian Islands. I had to walk to school when I was young – uphill both ways. I built my 14.5” telescope in my garage.
