Some amusement:
http://www.iflscience.com/editors-blog/52-common-myths-and-misconceptions-debunked

The "Theory of Evolution" one could be stated better (it actually is a theory but that's not a bad thing) and others are a bit ambiguous (the Great Wall of China is visible from space, just perhaps not with the naked eye) but by and large some interesting myths - including ones I haven't heard of before.
Did you know that black belts do not indicate ninja-level mastery, adding only a sprinkle of salt to fresh water does not make it boil quicker, and that sharks do get cancer? These are all part of the myths and misconceptions infographic created by London-based author, data-journalist and information designer David McCandless. The chart is organized by colored topic (ie. orange for food and green for nature) and sized relative to its “virulence”—...

As usual, here is my contribution to the global knowledge base as an appeal for a quick and merciful death when our SkyNet overlords seize power:

Or in case anyone else wants to mess around with their IslandAire PTAC units to get a +Nest working.

Using my Stoker and a cron job to monitor some weirdness with my Nest+IslandAire setup. It's hard not to love this stuff...

I've already proven my theory that the built-in thermostat is awful. A probe near it has dropped from 70 to 65 over the past hour while the Nest reports a comfortable solid 73 degrees. Putting a thermostat both next a the heating element and close to an outside vent? What could possibly go wrong?

So, if the mayor doesn't murder a groundhog is that good and there's going to be an early spring or does the early spring require the sacrifice? I can't remember...

I can only assume that the emergency street digging last night was for the new Ghostbusters movie...

To be honest the cleaver at top is much more versatile than I had expected, nearly replacing the santoku below it. I wish the 6" chef's knife was a little more narrow, but the pattern was discontinued and I was too late to pick up the smaller knifes. Maybe one will pop up on eBay eventually.

Doesn't everyone crack open their heating units, poke around at random terminals with alligator clips, and hack in a thermostat where none existed before in 3 degree (F) weather?

I'm happy to report that all three units (and the smoke detector) seem to be working fine. The last one got enabled this morning (it's the one that's orange, indicating the heat is on). Having a panel-based thermostat in a drafty heating unit right next to the heating element turns out not to be a good recipe for a stable temperature. It went from 76 last night to 69 this morning when it was set to 67 at the panel, the Nests seem able to maintain a +/-1 degree temperature on an interior wall pretty handily.

There comes a time in every father's life when he needs to explain to his daughter what a tauntaun is. I thought I had more time, but they grow up so quickly in the city...

I think we should give the term "measles" to the anti-vaxxers. I'm going to tell my daughter to call them "yousles" instead.

Story
Introduction
I've got over 15 years of experience building and running telecom networks from optical through L4-7 optimizations; lately I've been focusing on mobile/Android, IPv6 implementations, and security. I run Linux on my desktop, vim is my editor, docbook is my medium. I also move large amounts of dirt around in a tractor (well, I used to), play with cameras, and have been known to cook.

I was a bit skeptical at first, but things went very smoothly for me. The business class number is definitely worth the extra $25 to have a choice and frequently they'll have groups of similar/sequential numbers for sale (my wife and I have numbers ending in 20 and 22, but the rest is the same and easy to remember). Check back every few days to see what's new, there's a decent rotation of stock. Porting to Google Voice was a snap and with friendly and prompt service the entire time. If you want a bit of New York, or are just a fan of Seinfeld Season 9, Episode 19 then 212 Area Code is legitimately cool!

Decent fast food with a diner-like atmosphere. The roast beef sandwich with horseradish mayo isn't bad (although I would prefer it warmed), but I prefer the warm pastrami with spicy mustard. Onion rings are also good, but it's a huge serving!

They performed an on-site service on my JD 2520 for me and the tech was very helpful in explaining what he was doing. Since then I've visited the store in-person to get a maintenance kit to do it myself as well as several other toys. I only wish they'd move closer to me!
