It took 58 years for my three seconds of national exposure, but it happened tonight (2/15).  On "The Bachelor" they showed Chris Soules' hometown visit and his return to Starmont, where he went to school.  He took Jade Roper to the football game.  Tons of media, as you might expect, besides the production crew.  Any other Friday night and I'm the only photographer on the sidelines.  After the other media had left, I hung around for some possible shots.  Lo and behold, there I am!  I know they had better shots of me, but I guess that will do!  LOL!

We had some excitement last night in my neck of the woods.  Any other Friday night I am the only white lens on the sideline covering the local preps, Starmont.

A Starmont alumnus and next season's (2015) "The Bachelor", Chris Soules showed up to the game with a date and production company in tow to film an episode.

Heavy fog -- and I mean heavy -- rolled in with just a couple minutes left in the game.  Made for some interesting shots.

Everybody got the couple in the stands shots.  When it appeared to be all over, most of the other photogs and ABC affiliate camera crews left.  I hung around on the sideline kind of out of the way, just in case there was more.  That's when I got the shots of Chris and his date sharing a "private" moment after the game at midfield.

Chris grew up a few miles NW of me.  Met them both for a few moments. He seems to be well-liked with an out-going personality.  She was quiet and reserved and smiled a lot.  I'm pretty sure it was something new for her to experience small-town, rural life.  Everyone I talked to liked her.  Don't know if she can operate a tractor, though!

I don't normally watch "The Bachelor," but I might have to set the DVR next January or so and see if I get a few moments of fame on network TV!

Covered a peewee wrestling tournament today.  Usually do prep sports and some college.  Sometimes it's good to do an event like this.  Images like this remind you that these little guys (and there were a couple of gals, too!) are doing it for the pure fun of it.

Sport at its finest!

If you're a little older, you remember watching roller derby on TV back in the 60's and 70's.  I went with my nephew and one of his co-workers to a roller derby bout (that's what an event is called) recently on a whim.

They've cleaned up play, outlawing hair-pulling, elbows to the head, chucking opponents over the rail, etc.  They skate on flat tracks now, too.  It's less "pro wrestling" in style and more athletic and competitive.

Just the same, there's still plenty of action and these shots are my first ever covering roller derby.  Talk about trying something different!  Had a great time, too!

Anyhow, the Dubuque Bomb Squad hosted the Quad City Rollers, who are a very good team.  The Rollers pasted the Bombers, 454-107.

Thanks, +Johan Dubruel .  I went to this on a whim and to have some fun with my nephew.  I like to post things like this to the Professional Sports Photographers community once in a while to shake things up a bit!  :-)

Did a staff photo of the local lifeguards (tough job, I know, but someone has to do it!).  There was some time afterwards for some fun stuff.

You may have seen the "floating head" pic before like I have, but I wanted to see what I could do with it.  It screamed "black and white" to me, and I think it works.

Many thanks to Nicole, the lifeguard in the picture, for helping me out and giving me her "smeyes!"

Also got asked to try and catch some hair fling pictures.  This shot of Taylor is probably one of the best.  Thank you, too, Taylor!

Had a fun time and it was a nice change from the usual grind.

Got out of my comfort zone and did some swimming yesterday for just the third time in 20+ years, although I see this becoming regular coverage for me in the future.

As I promised +Qingwei Chen several months ago, I shot a few frames using a slow shutter speed (1/15 and slower).  The one of the young lady is probably the best of those.

Had to use one of my backup cameras.  Banged the ID IV into a bathroom stall door latch at Drake Stadium during state track and cracked the small LCD window on the back.  Camera worked fine, cosmetic damage.  Just now taking care of it.

April 15 lunar eclipse in progress.  After you see it, you understand why it is called the "blood moon."  Very cool, and if you missed it, you have three more chances in the next 18 or so months to see another!  This is a so-called "tetrad."

Just to let you know I'm still around...

These are from two commissions (moms) of athletes playing college ball last fall.

The offensive lineman (white 55) played for a very good Univ. of Wisc at Platteville football team.  He's a senior and mom wanted some pics.  I appreciate even more those photographers who get great shots of linemen.  From their game at the University of Dubuque.

The outside hitter (#1) plays for DII Upper Iowa University.  Included some other teammates as well from a match against Minot.

The donkey basketball pic?  I live in small-town America.  Enjoy.
