The Young European Federalists Germany invite you to join our debate on the Schengen acquis and how the free movement of persons as a fundamental right guaranteed by the EU to its citizens is put at risk.

On Tuesday evening, 8 March 2016 at 8pm (CET), we will discuss current developments regarding Schengen, including suggestions made by the European Commission and European Council, the outcome of the EUCO summit in Brussels as well as JEF Europe's proposals to preserve Schengen via #JEFhangout. We will also look back at the manifold actions of JEF sections all over Europe during the first week of Februar for the pan-European #DontTouchMySchengen campaign.

The Schengen Area entitles every EU citizen to travel, work and live in any EU country without special formalities. Schengen cooperation enhances this freedom by enabling citizens to cross internal borders without being subjected to border checks. The border-free Schengen Area guarantees free movement to more than 400 million EU citizens, as well as to many non-EU nationals, businessmen, tourists or other persons legally present on the EU territory. This is now imperilled.

The Schengen Borders Code also provides Member States with the capability of temporarily reintroducing border control at the internal borders in the event that a serious threat to public policy or internal security has been established. However, it much remain an exception and must respect the principle of proportionality. The scope and duration of such a temporary reintroduction of border control at the internal borders is limited in time and should be restricted to the bare minimum needed to respond to the threat in question. Reintroducing border control at the internal border should only ever be used as a measure of last resort. At the moment, 7 Schengen countries reintroduced border controls.

We are looking forward to discussing the freedom of movement with you! Follow the debate live on YouTube and join in by using the hashtag #JEFhangout!

The Young European Federalists Germany invite you to join our debate on the General Election night in Spain, when the 350 members of the Spanish lower house, the Congress of Deputies, and most of the Senate will be elected!

On Sunday, 20 December 2015 at 9pm (CET), JEFers and Non-JEFers from different regions of Spain and Germany will discuss the first incoming results of the Spanish General Elections and the potential outcomes and impact for the Spanish and European politics via #JEFhangout .

https://youtu.be/7pqeNjf74Sg

This election is said to set a historical change in the Spanish political landscape, as two new parties have recently taken their place in Spain: the left-wing party 'Podemos' and the liberal-centrist and pro-European party 'Ciudadanos'. The vote is expected to put an end to a political landscape that had been dominated by the governing 'Partido Popular' (People's Party, PP) and the 'Partido Socialista Obrero Español' (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, PSOE) since the 1980s. In the polls PP is leading, but as no majority is to be expected, a coalition will have to form a new government. Which parties will be willing to govern together? Which will form the opposition? How will Podemos and Ciudadanos influence Spanish politics and the economy?

The economic crisis in Spain, which has led to high (youth) unemployment, as well as corruption scandals, have had a significant impact on this torn up election. The Podemos party, led by Pablo Inglesias, was founded in January 2014 to transform Spain's "Indignados", the anti-austerity protest movement, to a more structured political formation. Only five months after its creation, Podemos won 8% and five MEPs in the European parliamentary elections. Ciudadanos, led by 36-year old Alberto Rivera, has had similar success: It is now a nationwide party, although it had been created in the region of Catalonia in 2006. It opposes one important discussion point in Spanish politics: Catalonia's nationalism. Catalonia's possible independence would have major consequences on Spain, but also on the European Union. Will separatist parties win the elections in Catalonia?

We are looking forward to discussing the Spanish General Elections of 2015 with you! Follow the debate live on YouTube and join in by using the hashtag #JEFhangout !

The Young European Federalists Germany invite you to join our debate on terrorism threatening Europe and its citizens!

On Thursday, 3 December 2015 at 8pm (CET), JEFers from 7 countries will discuss the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Paris. Not only did Paris get hurt, but the whole of Europe felt the pain. This was an attack on universal human values, on the very foundations of the free, open and democratic societies we strive to be. Our answer can only be to be ever more united in defending our European core values of freedom, democracy and peace.

Do we believe that the answer to hatred and terror can only be unity, solidarity and fraternity? How do we fight together for what we believe in? And how are measures in the area of conflict between liberty and security been taken into account when talking about a European secret service, a better protection of the external EU borders, radical societal groups and accepting more refugees?

If some have ever thought there was no such thing as a European people, now is the time to prove them wrong! Follow the debate live on YouTube and join in by using the hashtag #JEFhangout !
