Organic Coming in as Direct
We have a drupal site where after a relaunch of an updated CMS - all organic traffic is coming in as direct. I tested in real-time and it happens on all browsers any device. We're using universal GA basic snippet, the code is in the header.Any ideas?

Did you change hosting providers? Mind sharing the site link?

Think there's a correlation here? We have a pretty large site (300K Urls) and the days where the "pages crawled per day" are high - we were getting indexed pretty quickly. Now that the 'crawl per day' has dropped, we stalled on indexation - and I noticed the time downloading a page has increased, Anyone else see this?

This graph is familiar, lighter smaller faster pages better indexation…

Why talk about something so basic? Is there really a need to teach men something most of us have been doing since we were 5? Well, yes actually. Ju

So I have about 23K pages in a /X/ directory in the index. I had some rules setup in robots.txt to only crawl about 5K of these pages. Well dev team accidentally removed the robots.txt - thus opening the flood gates. Now I want to remove these pages and start over. In GWT i have to wait 90 days for it to be re-crawled. Aside form implementing a noindex tag, any way around this?

First of all from a maintenance point of view the 5,000+ you want indexed... I'd put them in a separate folder so they will never be affected by what happens to the pages you don't want indexed. The 5,000 good ones separate them, rename all the pages you don't want indexed making sure they send 410 response code so they will be removed from the index as quickly as possible. Because of what happened here I do not like to rely on robots.txt I prefer on page blocks like noindex/nofollow there is far less chance of a big mess... just a lot of little ones ;-)

Canonical Loop...

So I have  client who has a bit of a canonical loop.

The pages that are indexed are 'site.com/page.html', but on that page there is canonical tag that points to 'site.com/page' (w/o file extension) but then that page 301 backs to the .html version.

Internal links all point to the .html version.

Think this is having a negative impact for rankings? (the pages do rank, but position 2-3) There are about 15K of these pages.....

What +Rick Bucich said. Google is probably ignoring the canonical tag. Personally, I'd have itchy fingers till I fixed it though.

Client messed up 301 redirects 30 days ago. We correctly re-mapped the 1-1 Redirect and dropped the old links in a html sitemap on the site so Google can re-crawl it again. Think Google will remember that old URL after they re-crawl it and shift the Page-rank back to the correct URL?  Or do you think that the wrong page now has accumulated that pagerank forever? Should I 301 the wrong page to the new URL?

+Jeevan Katwaru I presume they 301ed to the home page then. Things should work out over time. It depends on how Google reacts to 301s it does not consider are classed as a move. Maybe they are treated like a soft 302 which would be good news.

I'm trying to use screaming frog on a site but  keep getting the "connection refused" error. Now I ignored all robots.txt, and reduced the threads in frog  - with the same results. The site happens to be a https version  though, but never ran into this issue in the past. Any ideas?

Also, deepcrawl is a great alternative. If you/client have deep pockets!

Panda Penalty

So I have a client who was clearly hit by the first Panda update on 2011. Their sites has been around since 2004 - with ALOT of original content.

So after some digging turns out that they were invested in the Yahoo answers tactic in 2008 where you would create a persona, and answer/ask questions and use the site as the source for the citation.

The client ended up copying/pasting their articles paragraph-for-paragraph using their site as the citation.

Any ideas how I can fix this? Even though they are the original creators of the content - will killing the content (404) help?

Without knowing the content and the excerpts from it... it's hard to say that this is "duplicate content". Excerpts are even covered under copyright, so to say if this is something that is automatically duplicate and bad is debatable. If it has a footprint (numerous of exact or near exact excerpts) that can be a problem... and an excerpt in an answer forum is quite possibly "normal user behavior" .... it comes down to intent. The quantity *may be a trigger* but that might not be the same for all sites.

BTW one Panda site I worked on we thought all the scraping was the reason it was hit by Panda. Luckily it was an old authority site so we asked for some help from a "friend" in understanding the problem and scope.... turned out the scraping wasn't the problem at all it was internal structure of the site confusing Google about what pages were about... since scrapers didn't have the confusing content around the scraped content they easily ranked higher. The fix was easy remove off topic internal links programmed into the template.

Think breaking a H1 tag in half a link has any negative impact for on-page SEO?

See screenshot for example:

It's a weird thing to do, but Kia's example shows that it makes sense for a call to action.

Semantically, wouldn't a link inside of the page header indicate that it's an important link? But why would a page header want the visitor to navigate to another page immediately?

Is Google going to demote the ranking potential of the page if you do this? Probably not.

Geez - the food is so good here and I really would love to give it 5 stars. The service is horrible though - servers are inattentive and there's no conversation whatsoever. The menu system is horrible! They have 2 bulk menus - one for chinese and one for indian food.

This place used to be good. The food was kind of bland and definitely not how I remeberd it. When we called to make our reservation they causally said "yes we have availability. Low and behold when we got there - we did have to wait as the place was jammed packed.

This place was great. The food was very fulfilling and the ambiance was just right. The service was very good, everyone is super friendly. Party of 4 bill came up to about $140.

I've done hot pot only once, and tried this place for my second experience. I enjoyed their hot pot setup and friendly staff. There was quite a bit of a language barrier, but overall good experience, good pricing too - as there were 4 of us and the bill was $79.

I come here for meetup event and this place is great. Their drinks are very well reasonably priced, very spacious and not too loud. The bartenders are always very friendly, have not tried the food yet but hear it's tasty.

I like this park. Came her for a festival with my wife an son and we enjoyed the scenery by the waterfront. Their kiddy park is pretty basic, but still very fun for my 2 yr old. There were some baggies of paraphernalia on the ground - but I guess that's expected for Queens.

Good place to meetup for drinks after work. Thursday's is ladies night, so margaritas are $5. Great service and friendly staff, a bit on the pricey side though.
