Pay the Tuition, but Don’t Ask How the Young Scholar Is Doing +Wall Street Journal @wsj #tuition   #ferpa   #students   #parents

- I enjoy discussing with parents their child’s performance in my class. At most schools, that’s against the law.

Pay close attention to college testing policies - 15 colleges and 15 different policies on new writing tests #nancygriesemer   #admissions   #testing   #students

- For many colleges and universities, the jury is still out as to the overall usefulness of the essay component of the new or “redesigned” SAT (rSAT), scheduled for its first administration in March 2016.

But judging from those colleges that have already made views known to the College Board, some initial reactions to the optional 50-minute test have been not at all predictable and more than a little disappointing.

How not to flip your lid over college applications +Washington Post @washpost #students   #collegeapplications

- We see students becoming preoccupied with college acceptance earlier and earlier and trying to prematurely specialize athletically, academically and “extra-curricularly” to the extent that they are robbed of their teenage years.

How High Schoolers Spent T heir Summer: Online, Taking More Courses +The New York Times @nytimes #students   #onlinecourses

- Among the millions of people who have signed up for these classes, there are now an untold number of teenagers looking for courses their high schools do not offer and often, as a bonus, to nab one more exploit that might impress the college of their dreams.

- College admissions directors, as well as administrators of the Common Application used by many schools, say that such online classes — for which students are not likely ever to see credit — are popping up on college applications, adding to the list of extracurriculars, like internships and community service projects, that have helped turn summer vacation into a time of character and résumé building.
